Netflix, ‘Elite’ Star Ester Expósito and Mar Coll Adapting Classic Novel La Regenta Into 2027 Film

Nothing was known about it until Friday — and now it’s one of Spain’s biggest movies of 2027. Netflix has teamed up with ‘Elite’ star Ester Expósito and Locarno winner Mar Coll to adapt Clarín’s classic novel “La Regenta” into a feature film, which went into production on October 23.

La Regenta Netflix: A Fresh Female Perspective

The project is completing a women-led powerhouse adaptation of the 19th-century Spanish classic — the realist novel by Leopoldo Alas y Ureña, better known as Clarín, first published in 1884–85. The film is being produced by María Zamora at Elastica Films, the banner behind Carla Simón’s acclaimed features “Alcarràs” and “Romería”.

The adaptation is described as bringing a “fresh female perspective” to the beloved novel — fitting, given that “La Regenta” centers on Ana Ozores, one of Spanish literature’s most enduring heroines, trapped in a stifling provincial marriage in the fictional city of Vetusta.

One of Spain’s Biggest Films of 2027

Bombshell news is right: this project was kept completely under wraps until Friday’s announcement, making “La Regenta” one of the most surprising reveals of the year. It now weighs in as one of Spain’s biggest movies of 2027, and with a creative lineup this strong — an award-winning director in Mar Coll, a global streaming star in Expósito, and one of the country’s most respected arthouse producers — expectations will be sky-high.

The timing couldn’t be better. Spanish cinema is riding an international wave, and Netflix keeps betting big on local-language prestige projects. A literary adaptation this ambitious, told through a female lens, could be exactly the kind of film that breaks out well beyond Spain’s borders.
