TV Asahi has dropped a fresh teaser trailer and key visual for Akane-banashi Season 2, along with new cast announcements, as the rakugo anime gears up for its January 2027 debut. The second season continues the story of Akane Osaki as she takes her first real steps as a professional storyteller.

Akane-banashi Season 2 New Cast Members

The newly announced cast includes Taku Yashiro as Asagao Konjakutei and Yōji Ueda as Hassho Tsubakiya, two characters who appeared in the final episode of the first season. Their arrival signals a major shift in the story, as Akane moves into the heart of the rakugo world.

TV Asahi describes the new season as the start of the Zenza Arc. Inspired by her rakugoka father, Akane aims to become a Shin’uchi, the highest rank in rakugo. After graduating high school, she formally joins Shiguma’s school and, now known as Akane Arakawa, begins her training at Yasaka-tei, a traditional and bustling rakugo theater surrounded by master storytellers.

Akane-banashi Season 2 Story: The Zenza Arc Begins

The official synopsis promises nothing less than “the living history of Rakugo,” with Akane finally training at the center of the profession where master performers compete. Fans who followed the first season’s Karaku Cup Arc will remember that it ended in June, after the show began airing on TV Asahi’s IMAnimation block on April 4.

The first season was directed by Ayumu Watanabe at ZEXCS, with Kii Tanaka handling character designs and chief animation direction, Michihiro Tsuchiya overseeing series scripts, and Akio Izutsu composing the music. Kikuhiko Hayashiya served as rakugo supervisor, lending the series its authentic storytelling craft.

For international viewers, the anime also runs its own “Akane-banashi Global” YouTube channel, where full episodes stream for free in North America and Latin America after their Japanese broadcast. Netflix debuted the English dub for the first two episodes on May 17 and rolled out later episodes weekly.

Akane-banashi Manga Continues Strong

The anime adapts the manga by writer Yūki Suenaga and illustrator Takamasa Moue, which launched in February 2022. Shueisha published the 24th compiled volume on October 2, and the series was nominated for the 47th Kodansha Manga Awards and the 16th Manga Taisho awards in 2023. It also ranked fourth on the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! list for male readers.

Viz Media’s Shonen Jump service and Shueisha’s MANGA Plus service both publish the manga in English, with Viz also releasing it in print. With a teaser, key visual and new cast now public, the countdown to Akane’s next stage is officially on.
