Mick Foley and The Rock gave WWE fans some of the funniest moments of the Attitude Era, but it turns out the two were never sitting backstage rehearsing their lines. Foley says their chemistry worked precisely because neither man knew exactly what the other was going to say.

Mick Foley Reveals Why His WWE Segments With The Rock Were Never Rehearsed

During a recent fan Q&A in Germany, Foley was asked about his time working with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and how the two managed to make their segments feel so spontaneous. The interviewer specifically brought up their comedic timing and how Foley knew when to interrupt The Rock or let him keep talking. Foley’s answer was simple: they did not rehearse anything, and they certainly were not following a script.

“The key is that we never rehearsed anything. And we never had anything written down,” Foley said. He joked that if he had told The Rock in advance, “Hey, I’m going to interrupt you and say your catchphrases,” The Rock would have refused. Instead, they just went out there and played off each other.

Foley and The Rock: Acting and Reacting Instead of Memorizing Lines

“We were acting and reacting instead of trying to remember,” Foley explained. “I would much rather have someone make many mistakes and speak from the heart than to get everything perfect that someone else has told them to say.” That approach helped make The Rock and Mankind — the Rock ‘n’ Sock Connection — one of WWE’s most memorable pairings, with their backstage comedy and unexpected partnership giving fans something different from the usual championship rivalries.

More than two decades later, those moments are still remembered by WWE fans, and Foley clearly believes the lack of rehearsal was a big reason they worked. Sometimes the best wrestling television happens when two performers are allowed to be themselves instead of following a script.
