Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay is sounding the alarm about the 2026 midterm elections, warning that the United States faces trouble regardless of the outcome. The ’14th’ director shared her blunt assessment with Variety at the Airbnb.org Gala last week.

Ava DuVernay’s Warning on Midterm Election Fallout
DuVernay did not hedge her words. She said that if the Democrats win the midterms, the country should expect an outsized reaction from the administration, and if they lose, she expects the very same outsized reaction.
The Selma and ’13th’ director has never been shy about speaking on politics. Her comment that the nation is in trouble either way lands just days before voters head to the polls on November 3, 2026, with control of the Senate and House hanging in the balance.
Why the 2026 Midterms Matter Beyond Politics
Hollywood has stayed unusually vocal in this election cycle, and DuVernay’s remarks reflect a wider anxiety across the entertainment industry about post-election instability. Whatever happens on Election Day, she believes the fallout will dominate the national conversation long after the ballots are counted.
