Digger Embraces Divisive Reactions in New Ad

Published

on

“Digger,” Tom Cruise’s long-awaited awards player from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, lifted its review embargo Tuesday morning to divisive reactions. Currently, the film sits at a 54% with 89 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, almost perfectly split down the middle.

So Warner Bros. steered into the skid, releasing an ad for the climate satire Tuesday morning that shares social media reactions from early audiences — good and bad.

“Decide for yourself,” Warner Bros. official account implored on X.

The ad features several sets of pull quotes from users on X, flipped across the horizontal axis and repeatedly switching places. Each pair features one quote that is positive (“Masterpiece,” “Brilliant,” “Excellent,” “Magnificent”), written in white, and one that is negative (“Unpleasant,” “Baffling,” “Very Goofy,” “Insufferable”), written in orange. The negative quote always starts on top.

“Same film, different truth,” the ad later reads. You can watch the full “Digger” promo below.

“Digger” has long been a subject of curiosity for film fans, as it marks Tom Cruise’s return to non-action acting after the movie star committed to years of (often very celebrated) blockbusters like “Top Gun: Maverick” and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Oscars fanatics have noted with interest that, despite being nominated for acting three times and receiving an honorary Academy Award in 2025, Cruise has never won a competitive statue at the ceremony.

And Cruise certainly didn’t return to the awards circuit with a safe project. The climate satire penned by Iñárritu, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone and Sabina Berman takes some big swings, both in its humor and its execution. It’s a dramedy bursting with ideas (and a pretty big reveal that’s been kept entirely out of marketing).

As the “Digger” promo says, you can decide for yourself how well those swings work.

Millicent Simmonds, Troy Kotsur, Nyle DiMarco Lead Thriller ‘Alone’

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Filmmaker Garrett Patten has recently wrapped filming Alone, a psychological thriller short he directed and co-wrote with Tiziano Tucci, starring BAFTA-nominated A Quiet Place actor Millicent Simmonds, Oscar winner Troy Kotsur, Emmy nominee Nyle DiMarco Emmy (Deaf President Now!) and two-time Tony winner Phylicia Rashad.

The film, which features a majority deaf cast, has wrapped principal photography in Brooklyn and is currently in post-production. James Broderick and Cameron Sault round out the cast.

Simmonds leads the film as Samantha, “a deaf woman living alone who receives an advanced humanoid robot designed to make her life easier. But as the machine learns her routines, emotions and past, their growing connection takes a dark and unsettling turn.”

The project was produced by Patten and veteran producer Tiziano Tucci, alongside DFA’s Brenda Linkous and Austin Lantero for Range Media Partners. William Lowery of Range Media Partners and David Keinath of DFA serve as executive producers. Orlando Herrera served as director of photography.

We hear the filmmakers are hoping to make a feature out of the short, ideally with the same actors.

“Alone was an incredibly special project to direct,” said Patten. “I had the opportunity to work with an extraordinary cast who brought so much depth and humanity to the story. The film also touches on themes that feel incredibly relevant right now — AI, isolation, connection, trust and our growing dependence on technology.”

“What begins as a story about a woman and a machine ultimately asks some very human questions about companionship and how far we’re willing to let technology into our lives,” Patten continued. “I’m incredibly proud of what we created together and excited to bring the film to life in post-production.”

CinemaCon Managing Director Mitch Neuhauser To Exit Post 2028 Show

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Longtime Cinema United (né National Association of Theatre Owners) vet Mitch Neuhauser will be retiring following CinemaCon 2028.

Neuhauser has been the face of CinemaCon, typically kicking off most presentations onstage, not to mention a relentless organizer of the event. He was key in mounting CinemaCon’s comeback as Covid eased with an August 2021 edition. It was a vital move for theatrical to move forward with CinemaCon at a time when the majors were being crushed by streaming due to the pandemic. The exhibitor-studio conference is typically held in the spring before the May summer box office kicks off. He’s been overseeing the growth of CinemaCon since 2009.

“It is impossible to overstate what Mitch means to Cinema United and the entire exhibition community. He is synonymous with CinemaCon, and it simply would not have become the spectacular event that it is without him,” said Cinema United President and CEO, Michael O’Leary. “Mitch loves this industry, the people in exhibition and the studios, and the experience of seeing a movie in a theatre. His vision and leadership will be missed, but I want to join everyone in the entertainment industry in congratulating him on an amazing career.”

“Working in this incredible industry for the past 45 years has been the dream of a lifetime, capped off by bringing CinemaCon to fruition in 2011,” Neuhauser said. “Our industry is unlike any other. We bring people together from all around the world, and that has inspired me across all these years. Knowing that Michael O’Leary and Cinema United are also recognizing the important contributions of Matt Pollock, who I’ve worked with for almost two decades, gives me great satisfaction. CinemaCon, Cinema United and the global theatrical industry will be in great hands when the baton is passed in 2028.”

Neuhauser began his career in 1981 with the Sunshine Group Worldwide, where he ultimately became VP following the company’s purchase in 1998 and oversaw ShowEast, Cinema Expo, CineAsia, and later ShoWest, beginning in 2001. Neuhauser joined NATO in 2009 and spearheaded the transition from ShoWest to CinemaCon in 2011. Neuhauser served on the Board of Directors of the Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers Foundation and received the Heart of Show Business Award from Variety of Southern California in 2018.

Cinema United also announced today that Matt Pollock will immediately assume the role of Co-Managing Director of CinemaCon and begin the transition of taking over the lead position in 2028.

“Matt is the perfect choice to assume this important role. He has all the qualities necessary to ensure that CinemaCon continues to grow and evolve into the future,” added O’Leary. “Making him Co-Managing Director today illustrates the confidence that I, along with the entire exhibition industry, have in Matt. I am also pleased he will work closely with Mitch through this important transition.”

Hosted by Cinema United, CinemaCon will take place on April 12-15, 2027 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
