West Ham in final stage of contract talks with Tomas Soucek

Published

on

West Ham United are in talks with midfielder Tomas Soucek over a contract extension.

The 31-year-old, who has made 271 appearances since joining from Slavia Prague in 2020, is entering the final months of his deal. Although it has a one-year option, the club is keen to reward Soucek with an improved deal.

Sources with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, say the midfielder wants to retire at West Ham and the deal should be finalised later this month. Negotiations are in the final phase with the length of the contract yet to be agreed.

Ahead of West Ham’s home fixture against London rivals Queens Park Rangers this Friday, Soucek is in contention to make his first appearance of the season. The Czech Republic international returned to full training last month after being sidelined for ten weeks with an ankle ligament injury, which he sustained while representing the national team at the 2026 World Cup.

“He’s doing well,” Nuno Espirito Santo said in his pre-match press conference on Thursday. “It was a long period with injury but he had a good rehabilitation. He’s training well and it was good to see him score (against Wycombe Wanderers in a behind closed doors friendly during the international break). It was good for him to have minutes and other players who haven’t had the chance to play.

“It’s always the objective of getting players that are injured back as soon as possible. Tomas is part of that group that is coming back and improving. We’re going to need all the squad.”

Nuno has competition for places in midfield, following the summer additions of Arne Engels and Divine Mukasa, and the emergence of academy graduate Lewis Orford and Mohamadou Kante. Fellow midfielders Edson Alvarez and Soungoutou Magassa remain on the periphery after failing to leave in the summer.

West Ham drew 2-2 against rivals Millwall before the international break, leaving them second in the standings behind league leaders Swansea City, and Nuno hopes his side will learn from previous mistakes.

“It (the international break) was needed,” Nuno added. “It was a very hectic schedule, we demanded and asked so many things out of the squad and they were exhausted by the end of it. So the break came in a good moment and has allowed us to recover mentally and physically.

“The main lesson that we have taken from the game against Millwall is we have to start the games much better. We are reacting and we want to be the ones that cause. We want to be the first team to score. There were many things from that game that we didn’t do well.”
