Steve McQueen’s Legacy Lives On: Remakes and New Projects Heat Up

Published

on

Steve McQueen has been dead for 46 years, yet somehow he’s juggling one of the busiest development slates in town. At the moment, three of his signature movies are simultaneously being resurrected — one by another famous Steven, as in Spielberg — while a fourth project based on an ex-wife’s memoir continues to gestate as either a possible drama or documentary.

The one closest to arriving on screens is Michael B. Jordan’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, McQueen’s 1968 thriller about a bored millionaire who commits elaborate crimes for kicks. Jordan, who’s directing and starring in the reboot — the second, since Pierce Brosnan played the part in a 1999 version — finished shooting last year and is now in the editing bay prepping for a March release.

Meanwhile, Adolescence director Philip Barantini is attached to a Netflix remake of The Getaway, the 1972 Sam Peckinpah bank robbery drama on which McQueen met future wife Ali MacGraw. No cast has been announced. And at Amblin, Spielberg is developing a movie based on McQueen’s character in the 1968 cop drama Bullitt — not a remake so much as a new storyline about the San Francisco detective. Bradley Cooper is said to be attached to star.

So what explains the sudden McQueen resurgence? Neile McQueen, the actor’s 94-year-old first wife — and author of My Husband, My Friend, a memoir that’s been kicking around Hollywood for nearly 20 years, both as a prospective doc and a scripted adaptation — believes the answer has something to do with his inimitable charisma. “He was a true original,” she says. “There was a toughness about him but a softness, too.”

One of McQueen’s grandkids, Chase McQueen, 31, offers a similar take. “My grandfather was the epitome of cool,” he says. “And cool never expires.”

Marvel Sets New Live-Action Spy Thriller Series ‘Zodiac’ For 2028

Published

on

Marvel Television announced a new live-action television series titled Zodiac.

The series, revealed at New York Comic-Con on Thursday, is a spy thriller and is set for release in 2028, per the studio.

Zodiac will join a waning live-action TV slate at Marvel, where many of the franchise’s most popular titles have either already ended or soon will. The WandaVision trilogy is coming to its conclusion later this month with the release of VisionQuest.

The Vision spinoff, headlined by Paul Bettany, is said to take place after the events in WandaVision where the character made a return after Thanos killed him in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. The new series is believed to follow Vision (Bettany) as he tries to regain his memory and humanity.

Daredevil: Born Again, which welcomed several beloved characters back into the MCU including Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, will end with Season 3 next year.

The studio also recently reneged on a second season of Wonder Man.

‘Mad Max’ Duo Alyla Browne & Elsa Pataky Lead Cast In ‘Chiquita’

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga duo Alyla Browne and Elsa Pataky are among the ensemble cast for Australian feature Chiquita, which has started production in Byron Bay, Australia.

Set against the world of endurance horse riding, the movie is described as “an uplifting family adventure about two outsiders; a rebellious teenage girl and a mistreated rescue horse who form an unlikely bond at a pivotal moment in their lives.”

Australian distributor Umbrella will release the film in the 2027 summer school holiday corridor.

Written and directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, based on a story by Mark Morrissey, the feature is produced by Blake Northfield and Michelle Krumm for Bronte Studios and Mark Morrissey for First Option Pictures.

Also starring are Michael Caton (The Castle), Stephen Peacocke (The Newsreader), Martin Sacks (Blue Heelers) and rising Australian actor Aswan Reid (The New Boy).

Major production investment comes from Screen Australia, in association with Screen NSW. International sales are being handled by Essential Film Group. Additional financing comes from Obsidian Creek Capital.

Director of photography is Jonathan Baker; first assistant director is Jamie Crooks, while production designer is Tylah Pratt, and costume designer Tracey Rose. Hair and makeup designer is Nele Pandis, and editor Gabriella Muir. Sandra Tahmasby Baxter serves as Head of Production for Bronte Studios.

““What I love about Chiquita is that underneath this big, cinematic adventure is a really simple relationship between a girl and a horse,” said Roache-Turner. “They’re both outsiders, they’re both pretty wild, and neither of them has much interest in doing what they’re told. Somehow they find each other. That gives us the heart of the movie, and then we get to surround it with galloping horses, endurance racing and these huge Australian landscapes. It’s a proper big screen family film with real scale.”

“From the beginning, we saw Chiquita as an Australian story with the ability to travel,” added Northfield and Krumm. “It has all the ingredients of a great family adventure with an extraordinary young protagonist, humour, heart, horses and a spectacular landscape but underneath that is a deeply relatable story about grief, family and finding where you belong. With this cast, Kiah’s vision and Essential Film Group taking the film to the international market, we’re incredibly excited about the audience this film can reach.”
