UK sport tickets: Price increases analysed for the Ashes, Wimbledon, Silverstone and more
In a world with increasingly volatile economics and changing consumer habits, broadcasting live sport has been one of the more reliable ways for companies to generate revenue.
And live sport – and entertainment – is one of the few industries whose financial success is unlikely to be significantly compromised by artificial intelligence in the coming years.
That means more and more companies have taken an interest in buying the rights to show sports events, which means more TV subscriptions than ever before are necessary for fans wanting to watch all of the action.
A football fan in the UK, for example, must subscribe to Sky Sports, TNT Sports, Amazon Prime and Premier Sports, if they want to watch all of the matches across the Premier League, Champions League and Scottish Premiership.
And they must pay for an annual TV licence to watch other matches on the BBC and ITV.
Without taking advantage of special offers, other sports can require even more subscriptions and even more money.
“It certainly helps when you can say to a fan that they only need to buy one subscription to see everything in one sport,” says Pete Oliver, CEO of growth markets for DAZN, a global sports streaming service.
“If a sport is very fragmented, we would say it’s not going to be a great proposition for the fan [for us to be involved], and it’s probably not going to be a great commercial prospect for us.
“The cost of entertainment [subscriptions] generally will increase over time.
“There is natural inflation in the market, there is a lot of competition for sports rights, the athletes want to be paid more money, and the leagues want to do what is right for them, and if they can get somebody to pay more for the content, they will”

Open de Espana: Joe Dean and Grant Forrest share one-shot lead going into final round in Madrid | Golf News
England’s Joe Dean and Scotland’s Grant Forrest share a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Open de Espana in Madrid.
Forrest began the day with a one-shot advantage at the Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid but slipped down the leaderboard after bogeying the fifth hole.
However, birdies at the 11th, 14th and 16th gave the Scot a four-under-par round of 67 and a total of 13 under.
Forrest, who is searching for his third DP World Tour title, said on europeantour.com: “I’m happy with how I handled today.
“I didn’t have my best stuff but I’m really proud of how I dug in and made some nice putts, a couple of good recovery shots, and all in all a decent score again.
“This is one of my favourite tournaments, it’s been good to me in the past, and I’d love nothing more than to go home with a trophy tomorrow.”
His round was enough to leave him tied for the lead alongside Sheffield’s Dean, who will feel he should have produced an even better outcome than the 65 he signed for.
Dean, a former delivery driver, who secured his maiden victory on the European-based circuit at the British Masters, followed five birdies on the front nine with three more at the 12th, 14th and 15th to open up a three-shot lead.
But the 32-year-old then double-bogeyed the 16th and dropped another shot at 17 before finishing on a high with a 31-foot putt for birdie on the last.
“It gave a little bit of hope after those previous two holes,” said Dean. “We’ll go again and see what happens.”
France’s Victor Perez and Dane Jacob Skov Olesen both also posted rounds of 65 to move to 12 under, one shot off the lead, alongside Joel Girrbach of Switzerland, who was round in 67.
Angel Ayora is the leading Spanish hope and he sits three shots off the lead after a 66 on a day of low scoring.
Shane Lowry produced his best round of the week with a four-under 67 boosting him into a tie for 17th but still trails by eight shots.
