Sense and Sensibility Stars: New Film Isn’t Competing With Ang Lee’s

Published

on

Thirty years after Ang Lee‘s famed adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, another telling of the Jane Austen classic has arrived — this one courtesy of director Georgia Oakley, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles.

Lee’s 1995 version — which starred Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant — won an Oscar for its script, penned by Thompson, and was also up for best picture. Those are some big footsteps to follow in, but at the film‘s Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday, Edgar-Jones said the intention was not to compete with the past film.

“I think that the great thing about Austen is because her writing is so timeless and transcendent and deep in terms of its themes, there’s always so much you can mine from it. I kind of think of her a little like Shakespeare, that every new individual that takes on her words and her characters will find something unique because of their uniqueness,” the star, who plays Elinor Dashwood, told The Hollywood Reporter. “I kind of feel like there’s a really beautiful conversation happening between each adaptation, and really the unifying quality being how brilliant and wonderful and amazing the Dashwood women are.”

Many in the cast — including Creed-Miles, Frank Dillane and George MacKay — say they avoided watching Lee’s film altogether, as Caitriona Balfe noted, “I think you’re just doing your own thing, and Georgia is somebody that had a very unique take on it, something that spoke to her and that’s what we were following and really excited. I love the Ang Lee version and I don’t think that it needs to be this compared to that, it’s just that these are two expressions of the same story but in different ways.”

Sense and Sensibility, Austen’s 1811 debut novel, follows three sisters after they’re forced to leave their family estate with their widowed mother and move to a humble cottage, finding love and heartbreak along the way.

On top of the iconic source material, Edgar-Jones also had some prior experience to draw on in the romantic drama genre, after starring in the 2020 hit series Normal People.

“I’ve always enjoyed stories that explore the stakes of a human life, I think it’s why Austen is so transcendent, because we all understand what it is to feel heartbreak and fall in love for the first time and how we grow in our early 20s and what we learn about ourselves,” she explained. “I suppose that’s always been something that’s really fascinated me, and also characters that maybe are initially overlooked that actually have a lot more to them if people take the time to find out. And Elinor is that in spades.”

Sense and Sensibility hits theaters Oct. 16.

‘Mad Max’ Duo Alyla Browne & Elsa Pataky Lead Cast In ‘Chiquita’

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga duo Alyla Browne and Elsa Pataky are among the ensemble cast for Australian feature Chiquita, which has started production in Byron Bay, Australia.

Set against the world of endurance horse riding, the movie is described as “an uplifting family adventure about two outsiders; a rebellious teenage girl and a mistreated rescue horse who form an unlikely bond at a pivotal moment in their lives.”

Australian distributor Umbrella will release the film in the 2027 summer school holiday corridor.

Written and directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, based on a story by Mark Morrissey, the feature is produced by Blake Northfield and Michelle Krumm for Bronte Studios and Mark Morrissey for First Option Pictures.

Also starring are Michael Caton (The Castle), Stephen Peacocke (The Newsreader), Martin Sacks (Blue Heelers) and rising Australian actor Aswan Reid (The New Boy).

Major production investment comes from Screen Australia, in association with Screen NSW. International sales are being handled by Essential Film Group. Additional financing comes from Obsidian Creek Capital.

Director of photography is Jonathan Baker; first assistant director is Jamie Crooks, while production designer is Tylah Pratt, and costume designer Tracey Rose. Hair and makeup designer is Nele Pandis, and editor Gabriella Muir. Sandra Tahmasby Baxter serves as Head of Production for Bronte Studios.

““What I love about Chiquita is that underneath this big, cinematic adventure is a really simple relationship between a girl and a horse,” said Roache-Turner. “They’re both outsiders, they’re both pretty wild, and neither of them has much interest in doing what they’re told. Somehow they find each other. That gives us the heart of the movie, and then we get to surround it with galloping horses, endurance racing and these huge Australian landscapes. It’s a proper big screen family film with real scale.”

“From the beginning, we saw Chiquita as an Australian story with the ability to travel,” added Northfield and Krumm. “It has all the ingredients of a great family adventure with an extraordinary young protagonist, humour, heart, horses and a spectacular landscape but underneath that is a deeply relatable story about grief, family and finding where you belong. With this cast, Kiah’s vision and Essential Film Group taking the film to the international market, we’re incredibly excited about the audience this film can reach.”

Skydance’s JB Perrette Makes First Moves After Re-Upping Contract

Published

on

JB Perrette has moved quickly to put together the executives that will report to him at Skydance.

Perrette, who is Co-Chair & Chief Business Officer, Skydance TV and Co-Chair & Chief Business Officer, Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, oversees global distribution, advertising sales, content sales, DTC strategy, marketing and business operations across Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery’s new owner.

Deadline understands that Perrette has signed a new contract, like a number of David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz’s top team. It’s not clear how long Perrette has signed up for, but his colleagues Casey Bloys, who he worked closely with at WBD, signed a five-year deal earlier this month.

He has gotten straight to work; earlier today, he named three executives to oversee content sales, advertising and distribution for him.

David Decker has been named President, Content Sales, coming ahead of the Mipcom international TV market, Jay Askinasi is Chief Revenue Officer, Advertising and Ray Hopkins is President, Distribution.

Decker’s appointment has also led to the first executive from this group to depart following the merger; Kevin MacLellan, who was President of International and Global Content Distribution at Paramount, is exiting, as a result.

Insiders told Deadline that it was important for the divisions that bring in revenue to Skydance to get their houses in order sooner rather than later, compared to the content divisions that are still working out personnel decisions.

Perrette is an interesting case; he was previously CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games for Warner Bros. Discovery and one of David Zaslav’s key lieutenants. But over the last few years, he has built up a key partnership with Bloys as the pair oversaw the growth of the HBO Max streaming service, Bloys on the content side, and Perrette on the business side. He will also now work closely with George Cheeks, who is Co-Chair and Chief Content Officer, Skydance TV.

Colin Jost & Danny Chun To Launch New Comedy Series ‘6 Bed 1 Bath’

Published

on

Colin Jost and Danny Chun are launching a new comedy series they created in a unique way.

6 Bed 1 Bath was made through a brand-supported model designed to give creators greater creative freedom and bring their work directly to audiences for free. The series was independently financed by Revue, which provided the upfront capital and production infrastructure, which enabled Jost and Chun to bring their comedy to the screen.

The show will be streamed via free and ad-supported AVOD platforms.

6 Bed 1 Bath follows a group of five roommates in their twenties who share an apartment with a man who’s lived there since 1982 and kept building new bedrooms every time his rent increased. The series recently wrapped production in New York City and will premiere across free, ad-supported video-on-demand platforms.

“Danny and I just wanted to make a show we thought was funny and somehow those are the hardest shows to get made,” Jost shared. “So we found a new, innovative way to do it outside of the normal studio system and we feel very lucky about how the cast and the crew came together. We’re excited for everyone to see it.”

The series reunites Jost and Chun, who first wrote together at the Harvard Lampoon.

Executive producers include Colin Jost, Scarlett Johansson, Danny Chun, Andrew Singer, Jeff Grosvenor, Jonathan Lia, Ryan Case, Molly McMillen and Jon Liebman.
