Australia vs South Africa: Matt Renshaw epic innings puts tourists in command
First Test, Durban (day two of five)
Australia 390: Renshaw 190, Cummins 43; Mulder 4-68
South Africa: Yet to bat
Matt Renshaw scored an epic first Test century in more than nine years to put Australia in control of the first Test in their highly anticipated series against South Africa.
After much talk about the issues among their ageing top order on day one, Renshaw ground out a majestic career-best 190 from 397 balls in Durban, emphatically pushing his case to be part of Australia’s future.
The 30-year-old was born in Middlesbrough and a childhood friend of England captain Joe Root – their fathers played together in English club cricket – before his parents left the UK for New Zealand and then Australia when he was seven.
As well as potentially match-defining innings, having dragged Australia from 124-6 to 390 all out, it was a statement knock from Renshaw who has had an in-out international career.
He scored 184 in his fourth Test against Pakistan in January 2017 after being handed a debut aged 20, but averaged 19.41 across 10 Tests before being recalled earlier this year.
Against South Africa, the left-hander hit only three boundaries on day one – he attacked only 14.2% of deliveries in making his first 50 runs, the lowest figure of the Australia’s top order. A throwback innings continued as he left well throughout day two, largely scoring square or behind the wicket.
He extended his partnership with captain Pat Cummins in the morning session to 86 and then expertly controlled a stand of 134 with number 10 Nathan Lyon to frustrate and tire South Africa’s bowlers.
Renshaw took the strike when needed, protecting Lyon from the pace of Anrich Nortje, but became increasingly aggressive to add boundaries and inflict further pain as the partnership grew.
He added a further 21 alongside number 11 Josh Hazlewood before falling in the first over after tea, leaving South Africa 22 overs to bat and losing opener Ryan Rickelton for a three-ball duck.

Down SFC: Clonduff beat Burren to end 26-year wait for Frank O’Hare Cup
Carr’s goal was a real captain’s contribution to settle any early nerves, while his composure was key as Niall Toner’s 41st-minute goal threatened to stir a comeback.
“It’s very hard to put into words, you can see what it means to so many people. It feels like there’s thousands and thousands out on the field here,” Carr told BBC Sport NI.
“Just to finally get over the line, it’s more a sense of relief because I feel we’ve probably left a couple behind in the last few years. I mean, finals are just all about winning and thankfully we did that today.
“You know, it’s ten years since we were in a final and I think there’s seven people playing that are involved today that were involved then. So, caginess was probably to be expected.
“The first week back after the Carryduff game in the semi-final, training was cagey. So, maybe training translated right on to the field. But nerves are normal. No matter how cagey it was, I’m just glad we came out to the right side of it.”
The season doesn’t end here for Clonduff, as they’ll go to represent the county in the Ulster Club Championship starting with a preliminary clash against the Tyrone winners on the weekend ending the 1 November.
Their opponents will be known after next Sunday’s Red Hand decider where Errigal Ciaran take on an Edendork side appearing in their first senior final.
“I was reminded there of an Ulster campaign that never came into anybody’s head. So, it’ll be back down there on Wednesday night. Get back to the tactics board and ready to go,” said Carr.
“It’s a massive honour. A massive honour for me and Stephen (McConville) to be up there on behalf of our players lifting the Cup.
“But to represent the county in Ulster is a massive honour for the whole group. Hopefully, we can give it a bit of a run, we’ll take it one game at a time. The Tyrone Champions come out flying in Ulster, it’s bonus territory for us.”

Man City: Prime Minister Andy Burnham to release details of his meetings with Man City owners
Burnham was mayor of Manchester from 2017 until earlier this year and his tenure took place during a sustained period of success for City.
As mayor, he championed investment from the Gulf as a way of growing Manchester’s economy, a strategy which was initially pursued by the city’s leaders before Burnham became the inaugural elected mayor of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
“I don’t think I misspoke,” said Burnham of his past comments on Man City’s owners.
“What I would say is my mind hadn’t been on all of the issues. My mind had been on Labour Party conference and I was doing interviews in relation to it.
“And also, I didn’t link those two things. You know, the questions linked those two things. What I would say is they’re very separate.
“The football issues are different from the investment issues. People will try and conflate those two things, but they shouldn’t, in my view.
“The football issues, the findings of the independent commission are serious, as I said in the interview.”
The entire process involving the charges against Manchester City is independent of the Premier League.
An independent commission held a 42-day hearing in 2024 which led to the verdict announced last month, with City also guilty of all charges except one relating to non-cooperation with the Premier League investigation.
The commission’s report said that “a number of important club witnesses gave false evidence in key respects and that some knowingly gave untrue and dishonest evidence”.
A separate independent appeal board will hear City’s appeal. The club continues to deny any wrongdoing.
