Fulham boss Alvaro Arbeloa ‘not worried about position’ despite defeat at Ipswich

Published

on

When Marco Silva was appointed Fulham boss in 2021 he brought a stability to the club that ensured they were competitive in the Premier League, without ever really being in danger of being relegated.

Silva departed in the summer to become head coach of Benfica and in appointing Arbeloa as his replacement, Fulham were undoubtedly taking a bit of a gamble.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid player arrived with limited managerial experience at senior level, having had a brief spell in charge of Real Madrid from January until May this year.

The biggest problem Fulham have had under him is conceding late goals, with his side having let in goals in the final 15 minutes in four of their six Premier League matches.

Despite that, Arbeola was defiant after the Ipswich defeat, insisting he is right man for the job at Fulham, and he can handle the pressure of needing to turn things around.

“Maybe you don’t know me but I played for the best team in world. I have coached the best team in the world,” he said.

“Maybe you don’t know, but just to let you know, that pressure is part of my life since I was a kid.

“So, it is normal in football. It is normal for players, it is normal for coaches and everybody that is around a team.

“I think pressure is something that is important for me and I like it.”

The Prem: Saracens 30-7 Bristol: Noah Calouri scores on Saracens return

Published

on

After the try-fest that took place at between Northampton and Bath earlier in the afternoon, this was a more traditional Prem affair with only one try during the first half.

After a sensational breakthrough season where he scored 18 tries, Caluori picked up where he left off just four minutes into his first game since recovering from wrist surgery, as Saracens stripped the ball off Bristol in midfield and moved the ball out wide into his hands to make it 5-0.

Farrell kicked a penalty to make it 8-0 before the hosts had Olamide Sodeke sent to the sin bin for a head-on-head tackle on George Taylor.

Bristol could not capitalise on the numerical advantage and Farrell then kicked his second penalty to make it 11-0.

The Bears should have been on the board right before the break with their best move in attack, but Jack Bracken picked off Sam Worsley’s pass to deny Louis Rees-Zammit a try in the corner.

They fluffed their lines again as Luka Ivanishvili was bundled into touch in sight of the line, but Randall finally got them over 60 seconds later, teaming up with Aidan Boshoff to break down the left and run in unopposed.

But Saracens re-established their 11-point lead when prop O’Driscoll barged over for his first Prem try and Bristol gradually faded.

Replacement prop Lovejoy Chawatama was sent to the bin for collapsing a driving maul and Saracens were awarded a penalty try.

Jack Bracken then clinched the bonus point score by skipping past one tackler and holding off a second to run into the corner for their second win of the campaign.

Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam told BBC Radio Bristol:

“You have to come here with the right mindset and physicality and we certainly brought that, we were right in the fight.

“We just couldn’t get our attack going at all because of execution. But the big thing that I didn’t mind was some massive defensive efforts.

“Unfortunately, we were very, very clunky on our attack – balls going out the back, so many balls going down – we had an opportunity just before half-time to score which would have been good.

“Here you’ve got to be precise, you’ve got to take your opportunities and we didn’t do that.”
