Ailing Barry Manilow Cancels Tonight’s Vegas Performance

Published

on

An ailing Barry Manilow has canceled tonight’s performance at the International Theater at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino after cutting short last night’s show.

Tonight’s cancellation comes just two days after the singer’s much-anticipated return to the Vegas residency on Thursday after a six-week hiatus. Manilow has been treated for the lung cancer he initially disclosed last December.

“After a triumphant welcome-back concert on Thursday, Barry got hit with bronchitis and had to cancel his Friday and Saturday shows,” a representative for the musician told Deadline’s sister publication Variety.

Manilow took to the Westgate stage on Friday but reportedly ended the show after just a few songs, joking with the audience, “Talk amongst yourselves” before exiting. The night before, he said from the stage, “I’m back!”

The Vegas residency was originally scheduled to begin last February but was repeatedly postponed as the singer battled the cancer and previous bouts of bronchitis.

In May, he wrote on social media, “Good news! I went to the doctor yesterday and he said I’m making great progress and look great! Well of course I do! Thank you very much! All the training and exercising I’ve put in is paying off. He did say, however, that I’m not quite ready for Vegas. That means I won’t be able to return for our May shows at @WestgateVegas.”

As of mid-day today, Manilow had not yet made any social media comments on the latest cancellations.

Noah Centineo Praises ‘Street Fighter’ Stunt Coordinator

Published

on

To outlast the best and bring Street Fighter to the big screen, stunt coordinator John Valera paid close attention to the combat styles in the video game.

Noah Centineo, who plays Ken Masters in the Paramount adaptation of the Capcom video game, which premieres Oct. 16 in Imax, credited Valera with capturing the “different fighting styles” of the game’s many characters.

“Every character comes from a different background, pretty much, right?” he explained to GamesRadar+. “So there’s like over almost 150 characters, all the different backgrounds, different fighting styles, and John Valera, our stunt coordinator, had to research for every character and every fight that they were in their specific fighting style.”

Centineo added, “Yes, the signature moves in the game [are in the movie], so that he could make them fight against each other in their signature styles, in their specific fighting styles. Meticulous attention was paid to detail, and I think it’s really a triumph. The movie has insane fights, and every character is brutal.”

Co-written and directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter also stars Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Don Lee as Gouken, Orville Peck as Vega and more.

Based on the video game series that launched in 1987, the latest Street Fighter adaptation comes after Jean-Claude Van Damme led the 1994 live-action movie, followed by 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk.

‘The Rookie’ Season 9 & Spinoff ‘North’ Get Premiere Dates, Teaser

Published

on

The Rookie is on the move… again. ABC’s hit crime procedural starring Nathan Fillion will premiere its ninth season on Jan. 6 in a new time period on a new night, Wednesday at 9 PM. It will serve as a lead-in to new spinoff The Rookie: North, headlined by Jay Ellis, which will debut on the same night and air Wednesdays at 10 PM.

The news was revealed in a sizzle reel played at New York Comic-Con Sunday which provided a first glimpse at the new seasons, including John Nolan (Fillion) & Co.’s mission to rescue squad members Tim (Eric Winter) an Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) who were kidnapped in the Season 8 finale cliffhanger.

This marks the eighth time period change for stalwart The Rookie which started its eight season in the Tuesday 10 PM slot before being relocated to Mondays at 10 PM to make room for ABC’s latest light character-based procedural R.J. Decker.

The Rookie and The Rookie: North will now run in a block on Wednesday, presumably following ABC’s comedy block of Abbott Elementary and Shifting Gears. (ABC is yet to announce its midseason schedule but Wednesday 8-9 PM has been traditionally its comedy block, with Abbott Elementary as an anchor with a 22-episodes full-length season while Scrubs and Shifting Gears both have limited-run orders, one for the fall, one for midseason.)

ABC was expected to pair The Rookie and The Rookie: North together, a practice regularly employed by networks in expanding franchises that helps to launch new offshoots and allows for seamless crossovers.

During the Rookie universe NYCC panel, Alexi Hawley, creator, executive producer and showrunner of both series, announced that Troian Bellisario, Dulé Hill and Molly Kunz will guest star in The Rookie Season 9, and confirmed that Andy Allo will guest star in the premiere season of The Rookie: North.

The teaser, which you can watch below, provides shows Tim and Lucy in captivity, with Tim being tortured, and the dangerous rescue operation.

“We’re risking everything we love to save them,” Nolan said.

The teaser also introduces Ellis’ Alex Holland, who is encountering some of the same problems Nolan did while adjusting to a new career as a cop midlife in a leafier, more rural environment — and the same conviction.

“It’s what I’ve been missing all these years, doing something that matters,” Alex said at the end.

Both The Rookie, which is set and films in Los Angeles, an The Rookie: North, set in the Pacific Northwest and shooting in Vancouver, air on ABC and stream next day on Hulu.

‘Artemis Fowl’ Animated Series Greenlit At Disney — NYCC

Published

on

More than 25 years after introducing the world to Artemis Fowl, author Eoin Colfer is teaming up with Disney for an animated series adaptation.

On Sunday at New York Comic-Con, Colfer announced during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel that the series has been greenlit for Disney Channel and Disney+, and he will serve as executive producer.

Based on the book series that launched in 2001, Artemis Fowl follows the titular 13-year-old genius as he uncovers an underground world of armed and dangerous — and surprisingly high-tech — fairies, which gives him the idea to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mom and save his family.

“I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the Artemis Fowl animation on screen,” said Colfer. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, said, “For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures. Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years.”

In addition to Colfer, EPs include Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson.
