For most of her life, Seto Miyoko lived in service of others. Now, at 75, the Japanese grandmother says she’s finally living for herself — after a late-life career turn into the adult film industry gave her an independence she spent decades without.
Seto’s story began at 24, when she married. After having two children, she divorced her first husband at 34 and raised her family as a single mother. Her second marriage brought a husband with his own child and an ailing mother-in-law she took on caring for — but, by her own account, no intimacy. She says she went over 20 years without sex.
An Unlikely Second Act
At 70, Seto found herself dependent on her daughter and repeatedly turned away from conventional jobs because of her age. That’s when she remembered an offer she’d received from an adult video company — and her daughter encouraged her to take it.
Her daughter didn’t just approve: she accompanied Seto to the agency and stood by her as she signed the contract. Since entering the industry, Seto has appeared in 17 films and recently began working at an establishment as well — again with her daughter’s encouragement.
What makes Seto’s account striking is how matter-of-fact she is about the sequence of events: a lifetime of marriages shaped around others’ needs, a widowhood that left her financially dependent, and a daughter who — rather than reacting with shame — walked her through the agency’s doors. That support has been central to her framing of the work not as exploitation but as a deliberate choice made by an adult fully aware of the trade-offs.
Living On Her Own Terms
Seto says the work has given her something money alone couldn’t buy: a sense of ownership over her own life. After decades defined by caregiving and obligation, she describes now viewing intimacy as a joyful experience rather than a duty — and calls the financial independence the work provides a key part of her newfound freedom.
Her story has resonated widely as a challenge to assumptions about age, desire and dignity — a reminder that reinvention doesn’t come with an expiration date. Whether society approves or not, Seto Miyoko has made her choice clear: at 75, she’s finally living her best life, on her own terms.
