WWE has added a championship showdown to tonight’s SmackDown, as AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix defends his gold against Ricky Saints on the October 16 edition of the blue brand.

A Rematch Months in the Making
This is far from a fresh rivalry. Fenix and Saints last met in a singles match on the September 11 episode of SmackDown, which emanated from Mexico City. On that night, Fenix retained the AAA title, surviving a competitive outing before sealing the win. Since then, the champion has stayed busy, defending the belt at AAA TripleMania 34 in a four-way against Nathan Frazer, Jack Cartwheel, and Mini Vikingo.
But Saints has been building his case for another shot. In a recent digital exclusive interview with Cathy Kelley, the “Absolute” one laid out his argument plainly: the score between them is even, and he has been racking up wins since their last encounter. “If I can do it once, I can do it again,” Saints declared, challenging Fenix to put the title on the line once more and warning that the record books would soon list a new AAA Cruiserweight Champion.
Why Tonight’s Match Matters
The AAA World Cruiserweight Championship has become a fixture of WWE television since the company’s deepening partnership with AAA, and Fenix’s reign has been one of the standout stories of that crossover. A second loss to the champion would stall Saints’ momentum just as he finds his footing, while a title change would send shockwaves through both promotions.
The animosity has an edge too. After their September meeting, Fenix offered a show of respect, only for Saints to refuse the handshake. Expect no love lost when the bell rings tonight.
