Tommaso Ciampa has found his niche in All Elite Wrestling — and he doesn’t mind being the odd one out. Speaking to The Sportster in a new interview, the former WWE star described himself as a “unicorn” in AEW, explaining that he can flip between fan favorite and villain almost overnight. Since arriving in AEW, Ciampa has deliberately avoided locking himself into a single alignment. He’s leaned face or heel depending on the rivalry — a babyface against Kazuchika Okada, a likely heel against Andrade El Idolo — and he’s enjoying every minute of the freedom that gives him.
The Chameleon Philosophy
“I’m a unicorn in AEW in the sense that I’m like this chameleon,” Ciampa explained. “I can be a bad guy on Monday and a good guy on Friday. It’s crazy to me. With Okada, I kind of was more the good guy, and now with Andrade, I’ll probably be a little bit more of the bad guy.”
He added that staying unaffiliated with any faction has been key: “I haven’t really aligned myself with a group. It’s cool. I’m in my own lane, and I’m really getting to just explore that, so I really enjoy that a lot.”
A Rivalry That Showcases the Range
Ciampa’s current program with Andrade El Idolo is the latest showcase of that chameleon ability. In a separate recent interview, he praised Andrade as a special talent, and their showdown for the AEW National Championship at WrestleDream has become one of the event’s most talked-about matches.
For a performer who built his reputation on intensity and psychological storytelling, AEW’s looser creative structure has proven to be a natural fit. Whether the crowd cheers him or boos him on any given week, Ciampa is carving out a lane that’s entirely his own — no faction, no fixed alignment, just a chameleon in a world of clearly drawn sides.
