A16z Renames Crypto Fund to 'a16z Frontier,' Expanding Into AI and Emerging Tech

Andreessen Horowitz is dropping the “crypto” label from its crypto arm. The Silicon Valley venture giant behind early bets on Coinbase, Solana, and Uniswap is renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier, widening its focus to artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

General partner Chris Dixon announced the shift in a blog post on Thursday, saying the fund will target startups building technologies and markets that may take years to mature. The new focus areas include autonomous machines and networks connecting people and AI agents.

a16z Frontier: Crypto Fund Goes Beyond Crypto

The rebrand doesn’t mean a16z is abandoning digital assets. “This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation,” Dixon wrote. The firm will keep backing blockchain companies while adding AI and other frontier tech to its mandate.

A16z is far from alone in this pivot. Other crypto-focused venture firms — including Paradigm, Framework Ventures, and Haun Ventures — have already broadened their investment theses beyond digital assets, chasing AI and tech themes as the crypto market matures.

What the a16z Shift Signals for Investors

The move reflects a broader trend in venture capital: firms that once branded themselves around a single sector are going generalist as the AI boom absorbs talent and capital. For crypto startups, a16z remains one of the industry’s deepest-pocketed backers — but the new a16z Frontier name signals that the firm sees its next decade in a wider set of bets.
