Drew McIntyre has met plenty of Hollywood stars as his acting career grows — but two encounters stick with him: an awkward run-in with Robert Downey Jr. at an L.A. restaurant, and a movie-magic moment with Flash Gordon star Sam Jones.
Speaking to Sidewalks Entertainment, the WWE star recalled both meetings, one he wishes had gone differently and one that played out like a scene from a film.

Drew McIntyre’s Awkward Robert Downey Jr. Encounter
“I remember one time I got an L.A. restaurant. I turned around, get in my car, and Robert Downey Jr. was there, and I was, ‘oh, hey, man, I’m a fan of your work,’” McIntyre said.
Knowing what it is like to be approached by fans himself, he started to walk away — only to realise too late that Downey Jr. wanted to keep talking. “I realised as I turned away, he wanted to keep talking, but I committed to turning, so I kept turning. I was like, ‘ah, damn it, he wanted to keep talking,’ and now I’ve turned, and we’re both awkwardly waiting for our cars.”
“I kind of wish I continued that conversation, because I am a fan,” he admitted.
Sam Jones and the Flash Gordon Moment
The second story was far smoother. At a signing in Knoxville, Tennessee, McIntyre spotted Sam Jones — the actor who played Flash Gordon — and went over because his brother is obsessed with the character.
“I heard my name getting shouty, just ‘DREW!’ a big booming voice,” McIntyre recalled. “As I turned, it was like a scene from the movie Ted, I just heard the Flash Gordon theme. He was motioning me over.”
McIntyre delivered the famous Ted line — “thanks for saving every one of us” — and Jones signed a picture for his brother, which he proudly has on his wall.
McIntyre has worked with names such as Russell Crowe as he builds his acting career alongside wrestling, and says he has now met “so many Hollywood actors” along the way.
