The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has officially premiered, and the first reactions are calling the sixth film a perfect adaptation that breathes new life into the franchise, with Joseph Zada singled out for praise as Haymitch.

The film is the second Hunger Games prequel following 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and it takes audiences back to Haymitch Abernathy’s story, long before Katniss Everdeen ever volunteered as tribute. That history has always loomed large over the franchise: Haymitch, the weary mentor of the original trilogy, won his own Games at a terrible cost, and fans have waited years to see that story told in full.
Sunrise on the Reaping First Reactions Praise Joseph Zada
Film critic Griffin Schiller led the early praise, hailing the movie as the Rogue One and Andor of the Hunger Games franchise. He described it as a sobering yet powerful story of devastating loss and the necessary cost of rebellion, and said that as a fan of the series and especially the book, he could not have asked for a more perfect adaptation.
That comparison matters. Rogue One and Andor earned their reputations by treating a familiar universe with unusual seriousness, focusing on ordinary people caught in a rebellion rather than on spectacle alone. If Sunrise on the Reaping earns the same label, it suggests the film leans into the darker, more emotional side of Panem’s history rather than simply repeating the original trilogy’s formula.
Why Haymitch’s Story Hits So Hard
Much of that weight rests on Zada’s performance as the young Haymitch. The character arrives with enormous expectations: audiences already know the broken, sardonic mentor he becomes, so the prequel has to make his fall feel earned rather than inevitable. Early reactions suggest Zada manages exactly that, grounding the film’s bigger themes in a single, personal tragedy.
For the franchise, the timing is significant too. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes proved there was still appetite for prequel stories, but Sunrise on the Reaping is a different test: it adapts one of the most beloved books in the series, with a hero whose fate fans already know. The first reactions indicate that knowledge has not dulled the impact. If anything, it has sharpened it, turning a story about a sunrise the characters may never see into the franchise’s most emotionally resonant entry in years.
