The Pittsburgh Steelers expect clarity regarding the status of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the “next few weeks,” team president Art Rooney II told the NFL Network on Wednesday night.

“We’ve been in contact with Aaron on a regular basis,” Rooney said. “He’s been keeping us up to date on his plans and, you know, even though I thought it probably would have been concluded by now, I think we will come to a conclusion here in the next few weeks.”

Earlier this week, the Steelers placed the unrestricted free agent tender on Rodgers. The tender would set Pittsburgh up for potential draft-pick compensation if Rodgers were to sign elsewhere.

”We don’t expect that,” Rooney said, “but by the same token, you never know, and it’s just something that we had an opportunity to protect if needed. The deadline was Monday, so if we were gonna do it, we had to pull the trigger on Monday.

“We alerted Aaron and his representative that we were going to do it.”

Initially, key decision-makers in the Steelers organization believed that Rodgers would sign with the team around free agency. When that target came and went without an answer, Rooney said the hope was that Rodgers would give his answer before the NFL Draft. With that event wrapping up, the goalposts are moving again.

While there is no hard deadline, the new target is organized team activities, which begin on May 18.

Rodgers, 42, spent last season with the Steelers and completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Pittsburgh selected Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the 2026 NFL Draft and currently has two other signal callers on its roster in Will Howard and veteran Mason Rudolph.
