Guillermo Del Toro Receives BFI Fellowship From Cate Blanchett
Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was awarded a BFI Fellowship last night during a ceremony in London.
The filmmaker was handed the award, the British Film Institute’s highest honor, by his frequent collaborator Cate Blanchett.
“For a man that has tried for 30 years to make the brutal and the beautiful sit together, I have never made a movie I would not die for,” del Toro began his acceptance speech.
“I was born in Mexico, geographically, spiritually, and physically, but my soul has belonged to many parts of the world over the years, including England, and the UK has given me so much. The BFI is guarding not just British film, but guarding film as an art form and keeping that faith aligned.”
Del Toro added: “That is why this honour is so immense. I believe in the British Film Institute as a beacon of culture, in a time where we are told culture is not important.”
The ceremony was led by BFI Chair Jay Hunt and BFI Chief Executive Ben Roberts. Attendees included J.J. Abrams, J. A. Bayona, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Elizabeth Karlsen, Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright, and Rian Johnson.
Del Toro has a long connection to the UK. As a young projectionist in Mexico, he sourced prints from the BFI National Archive, including for Mexico’s first screening of Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom. His last Frankenstein (2025) was shot partly in the UK, using locations including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Salisbury, and Peterborough. In May, the BFI will re-release the filmmaker’s debut feature Cronos (1992), recently remastered in 4K by the BFI and Les Films du Camelia. Del Toro oversaw the restorations. Del Toro will also visit the BFI National Archive as part of the Fellowship celebrations.
BFI Fellows include David Lean, Bette Davis, Akira Kurosawa, Ousmane Sembène, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, Orson Welles, Thelma Schoonmaker, Derek Jarman, Martin Scorsese, Satyajit Ray, Yasujirō Ozu, and, most recently, Tilda Swinton, Barbara Broccoli, Michael G Wilson, Spike Lee, Christopher Nolan, Prof. Laura Mulvey, and Tom Cruise.
Del Toro will be in Cannes later this month to present a 4K restoration of Pan’s Labyrinth.

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed that he his thinking about life after Diddly Squat Farm.
The British presenter has just wrapped Season 6 of Clarkson’s Farm for Amazon Prime Video, but said he was uncertain about whether the show would continue for another season (though he did not completely rule out a renewal).
Speaking at the Royal Television Society London Convention, Clarkson said his thoughts had turned to developing a new “unbelievably ambitious” show, though he did not offer any specifics.
“We wrapped Season 6 of Clarkson’s Farm final yesterday, and Season 7 is kind of [like]: ‘What are we going to do?’” Clarkson said he is thinking about “fewer, bigger, better” ideas that can cut through with audiences.
“We’re currently thinking about what we do after Clarkson’s Farm, and it’s going to have to be something bigger to stand out to protect us from this onslaught from [social media content] underneath. It has to be unbelievably ambitious,” he said.
Clarkson added: “It’s very difficult to make a television show work unless you’re cooking on the moon or doing something incredible, and that’s where I think television has to get bigger, lose scheduling, and get bigger.”
The former Grand Tour and Top Gear host added that British broadcasters, including the BBC and Channel 4, have to consolidate to survive. He advocated for a “BritFlix” streaming service, which can carry clout with UK audiences.
Clarkson’s Farm has become one of Amazon Prime Video’s biggest UK success stories. Season 5 followed Clarkson as he was diagnosed with cancer and suffered a heart scare. He later said his cancer was in remission.

Apple TV has announced a second season of international Emmy Award nominated drama Carême, inspired by the tumultuous life of the world’s first celebrity chef Antonin Carême, who came to the fore in Napoleon Bonaparte era.
The French-language series is directed by Martin Bourboulon (The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan) and stars César-winning actor Benjamin Voisin (The Stranger, Lost Illusions).
Jérémie Rénier (My Way) returns in the role of Bonaparte’s chief diplomat Talleyrand, as does Alice Da Luz (Hanami) as accomplished chef and ally Agathe Guichardet. show, slated to begin filming next week in Paris.
Confirmation of the second season, which is slated to begin filming next week in Paris, follows hot on the heels of Carême being nominated for the drama prize in the international Emmys, the nominations for which were announced last week.
The first season of Carême launched on Apple TV in April, 2025 and quickly won rave reviews at home and internationally.
It is inspired by the true story of the world’s first celebrity chef, Antonin Carême (Voisin), who rose from humble beginnings in Paris to the height of culinary stardom in Napoleon’s Europe.
While he dreams only of becoming the most famous chef in the world, his talent and ambitions attract the attention of renowned and powerful politicians, who use him as a spy. Determined to escape poverty and fulfil his dream, Carême can choose revenge or he can have it all — women, wealth, fame — but at what cost? His love? His soul? His life?
Based on the book ‘Carême: Cooking for Kings: The Life of the First Celebrity Chef’ by award-winning historian, playwright and screenwriter Ian Kelly (The King’s Man), Carême is created by Kelly and Davide Serino (Mussolini: Son of the Century).
It is executive produced by Vanessa van Zuylen (Eiffel) with VVZ Production and Dominique Farrugia with Shine Fiction (Banijay France) for Apple TV.
The series films on location in emblematic sites in and around Paris, including the Tuileries Palace, the Château de Fontainebleau, Chateau de Chantilly and the Chateau de Compiègne.

Juno is planning a New York City and L.A. theatrical launch in early 2027 featuring live Q&As with its star, Icelandic performer Emilíana Torrini, followed by a digital release across multiple channels.
The Extraordinary Miss Flower is a performance documentary film by Broken English and 20,000 Days on Earth filmmakers Forsyth and Pollard. The project brings to life the remarkable story of Geraldine Flower and the discovery of a suitcase of love letters sent to her in the 1960s and 1970s whilst living in London that inspired acclaimed singer-songwriter Torrini to return to the studio.
Part film, part theatre, part fever dream, the film takes the form of a series of specially designed performances by Torrini combined with dramatic scenes and readings from letters by well-known actors and musicians.
The film features Richard Ayoade, Siggi Baldursson, Nick Cave, Alice Lowe, Mark Monero, Niall Murphy and Angus Sampson in supporting roles, plus the voice of Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Choreographer Kate Coyne performs alongside Viva Seifert and Saeed Esmaeli.
It’s supported and backed by Sam Dyson and Distiller Music and was shot at Distillery II studio near Bristol. Zoe Flower produces while Andy Starke is co-producer. Exec producers are Ben Wheatley, Beth Earl and Anna Hildur Hildibrandsdottir. Business Iceland brought the film to the attention of Juno Films via Taste of Iceland festival.
