Charley Hull surrendered the lead with a double-bogey on the 17th as Anna Huang stormed to a two-shot victory at the PIF London Championship at Centurion Club.

Hull set up her final-round charge with a course-record 62 in the second round and a six-under 67 in the third, and looked on course to claim a sixth Ladies European Tour title after making five birdies to lead by one shot with two holes remaining.

The 30-year-old’s final round included six birdies, but she dropped two shots by four-putting on the penultimate hole and although she birdied the 18th, she had to settle for a four-under 69 as Huang eagled the last to finish two shots ahead on 22-under.

Hull hit birdies at the sixth, ninth, 13th, 15th and 16th without dropping a shot before her struggles on the 17th green.

Huang made three birdies and two bogeys in her final-round 70 and sank an eagle-putt on the 18th to secure victory.

Arsenal produced more comical defending in pre-season as Borussia Dortmund won 3-2 in north London to win the Emirates Cup.

After Mikel Arteta said Arsenal’s defending in Wednesday’s defeat to Real Betis was “below the standard”, the Gunners found themselves in trouble again as they were 2-0 down at the break thanks to goals from Samuele Inacio and 18-year-old wonderkid Konstantinos Karetsas.

Arsenal had plenty of chances throughout – with the wasteful Viktor Gyokeres hitting the bar in the first half – and while Ethan Nwaneri pulled one back after good work from Christos Tzolis, a calamitous corner allowed Joane Gadou to make it 3-1.

Tzolis then capped off a promising performance by winning a penalty which Gyokeres converted. But with seven days to go until their Community Shield game with Man City in Cardiff, Arteta has some holes to fix.

Arsenal welcomed new signing Bruno Guimaraes onto the Emirates pitch before kick-off – he is needed sooner rather than later.

Arteta: We conceded poor goals

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta:

“We lost the game, obviously not happy about it. Things obviously have to be improved. Certain players need to get more minutes and rhythm, which is going to be really helpful.

“It has to hurt, whether it is a friendly match, a test or whatever you want to call it. But yeah, we know where we are. We know that we are missing still a lot of players and some players that haven’t had enough training. And yeah, sometimes it [losing] is good.

“We conceded some poor goals the other day, some poor goals today, in the way we competed, especially. But that’s a very collective responsibility. So, we need to improve with the players that we have. And we want to improve, for sure we will.”

Analysis: Is Arsenal’s defending a concern?

Since December 2023, Arsenal had conceded three goals in a match only once.

That was the 3-2 loss to Manchester United in January of this year, which ended a 121-match run without letting in three goals.

Now they have conceded three in back-to-back pre-season friendlies. The last time they conceded three goals in consecutive games came in April 2023, when they drew 3-3 to Southampton and then lost 4-1 in a title decider with Man City.

Yes, this is pre-season. Yes, there are still eight first-team players to come back and shore up the midfield, including Declan Rice and new signing Bruno Guimaraes.

But there are concerning habits at the moment. Arsenal looked pretty open defensively while playing their first-choice back four that they have available.

William Saliba’s injury looks pretty costly right now, while Jurrien Timber is still weeks away from returning from his long-term groin issue.

As a result of that, the Arsenal defence that normally give away so little look so open. From the six goals they conceded against Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund, three of them came from shots outside the box, two of them came from defensive corners.

So with all the talk about whether Arsenal need a new left winger, should defensive cover for Saliba be higher on the shortlist?

The club have shown interest in Ezri Konsa and an extraordinary move for Spurs captain Cristian Romero, which hints Arteta believes some defensive reinforcements are required too.

It’s no need to panic for Arsenal. On Monday, Arteta will work with a full Gunners squad for the first time when all the World Cup winners and England players return.

There were also some positives against Dortmund with Christos Tzolis looking sharp, Martin Odegaard creating lots of open play chances – while Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri both stood up once again.

But time is ticking towards that Community Shield with Manchester City, which will set the tone for the campaign ahead.

Liverpool threw away another pre-season lead as Monaco came from behind to win 3-2 in Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge at Anfield.

Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz put the Reds on track, but just like against Leeds last week in Chicago – when they were also two goals up and lost 4-2 – they were unable to kick on.

Aleksandr Golovin’s penalty and Mika Biereth got Monaco back level, before Paris Brunner headed in a late winner.

But minutes in the tank were clearly the priority for Iraola, who made 11 changes to his side in the second half, and handed a first Liverpool appearance for new signing Victor Munoz.

7: GREAT SAVE! Hradecky called into action to deny Wirtz! He dives low to his left to keep out the German’s bending strike after good footwork from Isak to tee him up.

16: GOAL! Isak off the mark at Anfield! A lovely move on the edge of the box as Gravenberch plays a one-two with Szoboszlai and then touches it into the path of the Swedish striker. He then turns and rolls it bottom corner.

29: GOAL! Liverpool are cruising. A ball into the area from Koumas leads to an absolute scramble in the six-yard box after Gakpo heads it back into the melee. Wirtz then pokes in from two yards.

43: PENALTY TO MONACO! Golovin charges into the box and steps past Van Dijk before being brought down just inside! The referee points to the spot…

44: GOAL! Alisson goes the right way to his left, but Golovin’s penalty is too good for him, high into the net. Monaco have one back!

56: GOAL! Monaco have levelled up! Biereth gets into the box and see his first effort saved by Mamardashvili. But it breaks back to the forward and he slots it home.

61: SUB! Victor Munoz gets a huge cheer as his name is announced at Anfield for his first appearance as a substitute.

70: BIG SAVE! Monaco are pushing to take the lead! They work it left and the ball comes into the box for Coulibaly to have a pop. He hits it lovely, but Mamardashvili gets his hands on it to push it away.

88: GOAL! Lovely corner whipped in and Brunner rises at the near post to head in! Monaco have come from two goals down to take the lead at Anfield.

Iraola: ‘We don’t have the energy for 90 minutes right now’

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola on LFCTV:

“It was quite similar to the game against Leeds.

“We played a good first half but we don’t have much more in terms of the level required to play like this. And then they were much better in the second half.

“In the same way we were better in the first half, they were much better in the second half and they deserved to turn around the game. [A lot of the senior players] were at different levels but mostly they were in a good place.

“Even the ones playing their first or second game had energy. The problem is right now they probably don’t have the energy for 90 minutes. They started to get tired and that will take time for them.

“We need more training with them, but we can take a lot of positives but also a lot of negatives from today. “

Iraola also hopes to have new signing Jeremy Jacquet and Curtis Jones available for their friendly against Como next Sunday.

“With Jeremy we decided not to put him in today, but he should be fine for the next game,” he said. “He’s taken a little bit more time than we expected.

“Curtis has trained every day but yesterday he had some issues in his hip. It doesn’t look like anything big, but it didn’t make any sense to risk it.”

Van Dijk on Iraola: I’m here for whatever he needs

Virgil van Dijk played his first game under Iraola, and he has been speaking about what it’s been like working under the new Liverpool head coach so far.

“It’s been absolutely fine,” he said. “We had a great conversation in the first week when he got announced.

“The main thing for him to know, and obviously that’s what I told him, is that I’m here for him regardless of anything he needs. For me to do for the team or whatever, I’m here for him.

“Hopefully we’ll be successful this season, that’s what we want.

“Nothing to take away from Arne [Slot] and his staff. We had an amazing time together, obviously last year we were disappointed. This year we have a new manager, new ways of preparation, so we all have to adapt to it.

“New staff, different training methods. But I liked working under Arne, and I’m sure I would like working under the new manager as well.”

While midfielder Florian Wirtz added: “The last three years he did at Bournemouth, you could see what he can do with the team.

“Of course we are looking forward to working with him. The first couple of weeks, I can just say that I’m enjoying it.”
