AC Milan agree deal to sign Diego Moreira from Strasbourg

Published

on

AC Milan have agreed a deal to sign Diego Moreira from Strasbourg.

Moreira has been given permission to undergo a medical with Milan, ahead of what would be the second-most expensive deal in their history, behind the club-record purchase of Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer but surpassing the €49.5million they paid to sign Rafael Leao from Lille in 2019.

Moreira is contracted to Strasbourg until 2029, having signed a five-year deal upon joining in August 2024 from Chelsea.

The 22-year-old, who made one appearance for Belgium at this summer’s World Cup, had his career-best return of appearances and goal contributions last season for Strasbourg, who, like Chelsea, are owned by the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital BlueCo consortium.

Moreira recorded five goals and nine assists in 42 appearances, including a goal and assist in the 3-3 draw against league winners Paris Saint-Germain in October.

The Belgium international joined Strasbourg having made just one first-team appearance for Chelsea in his single season at Stamford Bridge. He signed in the summer of 2023 from Benfica and spent four months on loan at Lyon, but was recalled in January 2024, and did not play for the west London club after his return.

Moreira moved to Benfica’s academy from Standard Liege aged 16 in 2020, and played a key role in them winning the UEFA Youth League two years later, with four goals and five assists in 10 appearances during that run.

Moreira represented both Portugal and Belgium at youth level, before deciding to proceed with the latter at senior level in May 2025.

He made his senior debut in September last year, coming off the bench in the 6-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Liechtenstein. Moreira was subsequently named in Rudi Garcia’s 26-man squad for the summer tournament, and made his only appearance as a substitute in the 3-2 extra-time last-32 win against Senegal, having been 2-0 down when he entered the match.

Moreira joins a Milan side which has been strengthened by the club-record signing of Goncalo Ramos from PSG this summer.

The club will compete in the Europa League this season, after dropping out of the Serie A top four on the final day of last season, and former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is leading them into the new campaign, following the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri.
