England vs Sri Lanka: Harry Brook hits 42-ball hundred and Jos Buttler slams 80 as hosts win first T20 by 119 runs in Southampton | Cricket News
Harry Brook and Jos Buttler went berserk in a T20 at Southampton for the second time this summer as England smoked 254-4 against Sri Lanka during a 119-run win in the series opener – their first game since Kevin Pietersen’s appointment as white-ball mentor.
White-ball captain Brook (114no off 49 balls) – who nailed six boundaries in one over – and predecessor in that role Buttler (80 off 44) plundered 128 from just 60 balls in partnership for England’s second wicket once debutant Aneurin Donald (12 off 5) fell after slamming a six and a four amid a bright but fleeting cameo.
Brook and Buttler had combined for a riotous stand of 233 from 103 balls at the same venue in July as England romped to a total of 257-3 against India that secured a 4-0 series sweep, with Buttler tonking a century on that occasion and Brook an unbeaten 95.
This time around the roles were reversed with Buttler – playing his first innings since the Hundred final at Lord’s on August 16 – missing out on a ton but Brook reaching three figures for the second time in T20 internationals, doing so from just 42 deliveries as he mixed big hits with slick, intense running.
No wonder England legend Pietersen, who scored almost 14,000 runs in all international cricket between 2004 and 2014, was smiling throughout.
That expression continued as Sri Lanka subsided to 135 all out in 19 overs in reply, to suffer a 13th successive defeat to their opponents in this format, stretching back to 2014, and England made it 21 wins from their last 24 T20Is.
The pacey, accurate and economical Sonny Baker bagged 3-12 from four overs, including bowling Kamil Mishara (10) to claim his first white-ball wicket for England, while leg-spin maestro Adil Rashid (1-31) nicked off Dasun Shanaka (24 off 14) with a peach of a delivery having just been belted for back-to-back sixes.
KP watches on as Brook dazzles at Utilita Bowl
Brook’s innings was a joy to watch, with his expert ability to pick up length on full display in the 30-run fifth over of the game when he struck Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage for six boundaries in as many deliveries (three sixes, three fours).
Brook’s first boundary in that set, a six onto the cushion at long-on, was a little edgy but his next five were sublime – fours over the bowler’s head and down to long-on, a scooped six over fine leg, a maximum over long-off and, finally, a four behind point.
Only Phil Salt – missing this series due to a quad injury, hence why Derbyshire batter Donald has been handed a chance – has hit a faster T20I hundred for England than Brook, taking 39 balls against South Africa in 2025 when the team amassed 304-2 in Manchester.
Former England Test captain Ben Stokes took to social media to say: “I don’t even think the genius of KP could come close to what Brook has talent-wise. You are an absolute freak, Harry. You’re mint to watch.”
Stokes would later add: “Bit harsh on KP actually. Both are freak talents but Brook is better in my opinion.”
Baker bags first white-ball wickets as Sri Lanka subside
Brook then rotated his bowlers smartly in the second half of the game as Sri Lanka’s monumental task was made practically impossible when they started slowly and then tumbled to 69-5 inside the first 10 overs of a sorry chase, one in which Wellalage (33 off 21) top-scored, crunching four fours and two sixes.
Brook’s boys – for whom seamer Jamie Overton (2-20) and spinner Liam Dawson (2-23) shared four wickets – will now hope to wrap up a series win with a game to spare in Cardiff on Thursday (6.30pm start), ahead of the final match at Emirates Old Trafford on Saturday (2.30pm start). Both fixtures are live on Sky Sports Cricket.
Welshman Donald will be looking to make a more sustained impact in the country of his birth in the second T20 – the 29-year-old came through the Glamorgan academy and is the Cardiff county’s first homegrown international since 2005 Ashes hero Simon Jones.
After Donald heaved a maximum leg-side and drilled four through extra-cover next ball, he spooned Wellalage down the ground, before watching on as Brook and Buttler made mincemeat of the tourists’ bowling attack – the duo spanking 28 boundaries between them.
Brook hoping to learn from ‘hero’ Pietersen
England captain and player of the match Harry Brook on Kevin Pietersen:
“[Pietersen] looked at batting slightly differently, in a similar way to me as well. He always wants to put the bowlers under pressure.
“He was a phenomenal player. The way he accessed different areas of the ground made it really tricky to captain and bowl to, and I’m looking forward to conversations about that.
“I mentioned to him earlier about trying to help me read surfaces and using my skills to perform on that pitch as well, not just for white-ball cricket, Test cricket as well.
“Hopefully he can have a big impact on my career. He’s a hero to a lot of players. We grew up watching him and it’s just awesome to have a man of his calibre in the changing room.”

Thomas Tuchel: England boss on World Cup reflections, wishing he’d eaten Azteca grass and an ‘exciting’ future | Football News
Thomas Tuchel wishes he’d eaten grass from the Azteca pitch after England’s World Cup win over Mexico this summer.
That’s just one of the statements from the England boss which has drawn attention across social media, following the FA releasing a new documentary called ‘Reflections: England’s World Cup Journey’.
In the documentary, Tuchel sits alongside former England international and Sky Sports pundit Daniel Sturridge to look back on England’s campaign, which ultimately saw the team finish third, having lost in the semi-finals to Argentina.
England’s standout performance of the tournament came in the last-16 win over Mexico in Mexico City, where they played for over 35 minutes with 10 men but prevailed 3-2.
“I texted a friend after the match and I just wrote, ‘I regret that I didn’t eat some grass after the match to keep something from this in my body forever’,” said Tuchel.
On the unity his players showed in that match, Tuchel pointed to their reaction to Jordan Henderson falling and breaking his arm in the post-match celebrations.
“If you needed any proof, any proof for what it meant to these players and how they were with each other, it was the moment when Jordan fell over and broke his arm,” said Tuchel.
“Within a second, the players were there, every single player was there, stopping the celebrations, building a shield, protecting Jordan and not going nowhere in full empathy. It was just so special.”
The film will be released on Wednesday September 16 exclusively on the England app.
The build-up to the Mexico game had been dominated by talk of the altitude of the Azteca stadium but also the potential for weather delays, which proved founded with kick-off pushed back.
But Tuchel says a calm came over the group when they trained together in Mexico before the match and meditation and manifestation helped them to achieve the victory.
“In the middle of Mexico City and we arrived and it’s an oasis, it’s so peaceful, it’s an unbelievable pitch and it is so calm, it is so peaceful that it did something to the players,” said Tuchel.
“They came out from the gym straight out on the pitch, they were having phone calls, walking around, it was such a peaceful energy.
“So we came up with this line of ‘silence is powerful’, that we enjoy the silence, we’re in a home country, we will play against the whole nation, the whole nation will be against us, the stadium, it’s almost impossible to win in the stadium, no one has ever done it before in a World Cup match.
“So let’s enjoy the silence, the power of the silence. We even had five minutes on the match day of meditation and manifestation of the last whistle.”
The FA are currently undergoing a review of England’s World Cup campaign but Tuchel says the experience has bonded him and the group together and he is “excited” about what comes next.
England face world champions Spain in the Nations League in the upcoming international break with the 2028 Euros the next major tournament. Tuchel reckons preparing for that tournament will be easier than the planning which was required for the 2026 World Cup.
“It created a huge bond to these players, it feels like they are my players now. This is the beauty of it,” said Tuchel.
“When you have a manager and then you have success and you have painful moments together, but you have so much time together and then you create a natural bond.
“I’m happy to see them, I’m happy to challenge them, happy to push them and very proud to be a part of them.
“I’m very excited. I’m excited to work with these players. I’m excited to have new, young players that we can bring into camp and that they can learn.
“We’ve got another step closer and I think we’re there.
“It’s very difficult to prepare a World Cup in the US, but it’s possible to prepare for a Euros and be prepared in Nations League tier one.
“The target is to have another 10 matches. We had 10 matches in the US, eight wins, one draw, one painful loss, but that is something to build on.
“We have all the right to hold our heads high and go with courage and positivity into the next challenges.
“We have four matches in the Nations League coming up and that’s where the focus is.”
Tuchel on Harry Kane going to another level
“Just so easy. He’s always there, he’s always in training, he always wants to train. The level to which he got himself now, since he’s at Bayern Munich.
“The level of commitment and training, how he arrived in prep camp, how he arrived in the qualification matches, the speech after the October camp, and he straight away stood up in the dressing room and said, ‘guys, we will keep on going in November, this is what we do’.
“He found another level in his game, but also as a personality, and how he shows up for training, how he drives training standards is one of a kind. The finishing is out of control good.”
On Jude Bellingham living up to his full potential
“He was one of the players of the tournament, not only for us, but of the whole tournament.
“He lived up to his full potential, you could just see what a competitor, what a machine he is, and he just thrives on the pressure. He just loves these moments, he loves these stages, it brings out the very best.
“He came with an amazing mindset into camp, with the best physical preparation. He came fresh, he came hungry, hungry for football, hungry for minutes into camp. He took his place and decided every single match for us.”
On the England fans and their ‘special’ connection with the team
“They lived up to the high expectations.
“Everyone told me, ‘wait until the tournament starts, we will have the best fans, we will be right on top, it will be amazing, the amount of people…’ and it was just like that from the first moment.
“They just felt this team. I believe that fans have a sense, maybe they cannot name it, someone will say, ‘yeah, they give everything, they’re sweating, after the whistle goes, they have to sit down because they’re so tired’. For everyone it’s maybe different, they feel it, they could sense it, that this team is together and this team means it.
“That’s what made the connection so strong. That was not artificial. That was very special.”

Tiger Woods: Golfer seen on range for the first time since March’s car crash
It remains unclear whether Woods is preparing for a comeback.
He has not played competitively since 2024 after rupturing an Achilles tendon in March 2025 and having back surgery last October.
After March’s road accident – his second arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence – Woods said he was “stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health”.
It was the latest in a string of incidents that have littered Woods’ recent years.
His marriage ended – as did lucrative sponsorship deals – after he struck a fire hydrant, a tree and several hedges outside his home in a 2009 incident, sparking accusations of extra-marital affairs.
In 2017, he was sentenced to a year’s probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving. That came after police officers found Woods slumped at the wheel of his car near his home.
In 2021, Woods survived a serious accident which left him with extensive injuries and he played only a limited schedule since then.

Reading 1 – 2 Brentford

Brentford emerged from a tense finish against Reading to book their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round with a 2-1 victory at Select Car Leasing Stadium.
Callum Wilson and Fabio Carvalho were on target in the first half as the Premier League club showed a clinical touch against League One opposition, who produced a number of chances but lacked the firepower to finish them off.
Paudie O’Connor eventually pulled one back to revive Reading’s challenge and Brentford could not rest easy in the remaining 18 minutes, although substitute Igor Thiago was among those who should have killed the match off.
It took just 136 seconds for Brentford to take the lead with Wilson finding the bottom left corner of the net after a slip in defence by O’Connor turned Dango Ouattara’s pass into an opportunity.
A cross by Carvalho caused problems in the visiting box and Reading then had the ball in the net but referee Tom Nield ruled out O’Connor’s bicycle kick for a high boot.
O’Connor was doing everything possible to make up for his earlier mistake as he headed a free-kick inches over the crossbar.
Reading had clearly recovered from the shock of going behind so early as they poured forward, with a double clearance by Michael Kayode saving Brentford before Jamie Reid went desperately close.
O’Connor slipped again as he fluffed a clearance, giving Wilson time to pick his spot only for keeper Joel Pereira to get his body in the way.
Brentford scrambled to keep out Reid as he closed in on goal and then Conor Masterson flashed narrowly wide, but the Premier League club then scored on the counter-attack.
In a cruel blow for the Royals, Ouattara took advantage of the space in defence to slide the ball to Carvalho who calmly directed the ball beyond Pereira.
Ellery Balcombe’s sharp reflexes prevented Josh Stokes from pulling one back for Reading but Brentford should have extended the lead only for Kayode to send a close-range effort wide.
Liam Fraser reminded the visitors they could not relax as he drilled a shot past the left post but the better chances were now coming at the other end, with Ouattara this time at fault for not making the most of a great opportunity.
Reading deserved a goal and it arrived in the 72nd minute when a corner was met by O’Connor’s header, with the Irish defender’s finish setting up a nervy finale.
On came Thiago but he was unable to improve the standard of finishing by his team, which had declined noticeably in the second half.
