Netflix Australia Audiences Boom, But Local Content’s Not Why – Report
Netflix might be the most popular streamer in Australia, but that doesn’t mean subscribers are tuning in for local content.
According to analytics firm Digital i, a whopping 96.4% of Netflix viewing time was spent on non-local content during 2025, a marked difference to other core Asia-Pacific markets for the streamer. U.S. films and TV programs were much preferred, the report showed.
Within the top ten most-watched shows, only See-Saw Films’ Apple Cider Vinegar hailed from Australia, with the UK’s Adolescence, American movie Happy Gilmore 2 and U.S. series Wednesday, Stranger Things and Untamed comprising the top five.
The lack of local viewing doesn’t appear to be much of an issue for Netflix’s local growth, however. Digital i Senior Analyst Elana Mozzato noted the country displayed high series completion rates for most the most popular titles, especially U.S. imports. There was also a propensity for Korean wave shows. Most measurement companies place Netflix top of subscriber charts and most viewing metrics.
Netflix’s local content numbers are considerably different in two other major APAC territories, Japan and Korea, with the proportion of viewing being 57% and 63.9%, respectively.
In Japan, the top five most-viewed titles were Bullet Train Explosion, The Apothecary Diaries, Last Samurai Standing and The Hot Spot, with Korea’s Squid Game rounding it out in fourth. In Korea, the list comprised When Life Gives You Tangerines, The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, Squid Game and Genie, Make a Wish, with Korean-influenced U.S. movie Kpop Demon Hunters in at number three.
The report also noted that 10 billion hours of Korean content had been consumed last year, measuring a host of major European countries, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and Japan. Of that 15% was for survival drama Squid Game. Japanese content totalled 7.3 billion hours and Australia content just 1.3 billion hours.
Meanwhile, Netflix’s push into ad-supported streaming has been successful in APAC. A majority of accounts in Korea and Japan are now using the local ad tier, with just under a third going the same route in Australia.
Digital i measures consumer viewing in 20 markets across Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, using a panel-based data collection that allows it to view entire viewing histories at an account level.

Set on the “lawless Texas-Mexico border in the aftermath of the Civil War, the film follows two Union deserters who drag a cursed chest of Confederate silver into a besieged town, unwittingly unleashing supernatural violence.”
The Curse of Silver is among the 80 projects selected for the 2026 Gotham Week Project Market, running September 27–October 3 in Brooklyn.
Liz Cardenas (A Ghost Story) and Ram Getz (Sunny) are producing; Cardenas is a former Gotham Cannes Producers Network Fellow and Juror. Gladstone, Gordon, and Michael Mortensen serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Geoff Marslett and Rafael A. Ruiz. A start date has yet to be set.
Marslett previously directed Annecy and FilmFest Munchen title Quantum Cowboys. His earlier features include Mars, starring Mark Duplass (SXSW, London Film Festival) and SXSW winner Loves Her Gun.
Gordon recently wrapped season 5 of AMC’s Dark Winds, executive-produced by George R.R. Martin. Gladstone next stars opposite Michael B. Jordan in Amazon MGM’s The Thomas Crown Affair, due out March 2027.

EXCLUSIVE: Altered Innocence has acquired all North American rights to Kasper Kalle’s queer gothic romance No Rest For The Wicked.
The film, which world-premiered in Competition at the 2026 Fantasia International Film Festival won the Cheval Noir Award for Best Director and the Cheval Noir Award for Best Actor (Pilou Asbæk). It will continue its festival run ahead of a theatrical release in 2027.
Set against the windswept landscapes of the Faroe Islands in 1862, the movie follows Baldur (Egor Venned), “a young fisherman whose isolated life is transformed by the arrival of Helge (Pilou Asbæk), a rugged Danish whaler. As a forbidden attraction grows between the two men, tragedy unleashes supernatural forces upon their deeply religious community. Baldur and Helge’s passion gives rise to a haunting tale of love that refuses to die”
The movie is inspired by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs’ 1885 short story Manor, an early work of queer Gothic literature published more than a decade before Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
The deal was negotiated between Frank Jaffe from Altered Innocence and Hélène Espeisse from Charades.
Written by Rasmus Birch and directed by Kasper Kalle, the movie stars Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Egor Venned, Sofia Nolsøe Mikkelsen, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson and Kjartan Hansen. Pic film was produced by Lars Bredo Rahbek for SF Studios, with Faroese Outlier Projects (Faroe Islands) and Truenorth (Iceland) co-producing; with support from the Danish Film Institute and the Faroese Film Institute.
“I’ve always had a huge love for queer horror, so it’s especially exciting to get to release one that operates at this level,” said Altered Innocence founder Frank Jaffe. “No Rest For The Wicked is a stunning, sexy and deeply romantic gothic tale that I can’t wait for fans to sink their teeth into!”

Outside of stand-up, he’s also known for Bad Thoughts, the dark comedy series he created, wrote, directed and produced for Netflix through his company, Your Mom’s House Studios. The series was Emmy-nominated this year for Outstanding Short Form Comedy, Drama or Variety Series, with Segura himself scoring a nom for his performance the year prior.
Recently, Segura also produced and starred in the R-rated comedy El Tigre. His Come Together Tour culminated with the release of his sixth Netflix special, Teacher, on Christmas Eve 2025. Also the founder and operator of podcast network Your Mom’s House Studios, he is repped by WME, Mosaic, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
