World Cup 2026: White House calls for Department of Homeland Security to reopen

Published

on

Giuliani added: “The swift response by law enforcement and Secret Service agents saved lives, but the chaos underscored the critical need for a fully operational Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are committed to ensuring America’s security is ready to meet any challenge.

“As we prepare for the unprecedented scale of the Fifa World Cup, with millions of visitors and dozens of major events across the country, reopening DHS is essential.

“We cannot afford complacency – the stakes are simply too high.”

The shutdown of the DHS – which is responsible for much of the security operation at the tournament in the US – has gone on for nine weeks. Earlier this month, officials warned that it had impacted preparations and hampered co-ordination between local and federal agencies.

The dispute is because Democrats have opposed funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – which comes under the DHS – unless there are reforms, after two deadly shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis in January.

On Monday, Trump urged Republicans in Congress to agree on legislation by the start of June., external

This week Republican congressman Mike Lawler of host city New York, said: “You’re talking about an international event in the area most targeted for terrorism.

“It is insane that we are in a situation where the department responsible for coordinating the security of this event has been shut down for over 110 days. At a time we’re at war, by the way.”

The 48-team World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Fury vs Joshua: Dana White casts doubt on fight after 24 hours of chaos

Published

on

Netflix and Saudi powerbroker Turki Alalshikh’s fight announcement was striking for who it included – and who it did not. The event was presented as a collaboration involving Alalshikh’s The Ring and White.

There was no mention of Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn, who has promoted Joshua throughout his professional career, or Queensberry’s Frank Warren, Fury’s long-time promoter.

White’s involvement was not entirely unexpected.

The Zuffa Boxing promoter has been saying for weeks he would be involved in Fury-Joshua.

Hearn has been equally adamant he would not. After Thursday’s announcement, Hearn said Joshua’s contract specifically prevented White and American sports entertainment company TKO from having a promotional role, claiming Netflix had not been made aware of that provision.

Hearn said there had been breaches of the agreement which needed to be resolved and cast doubt on whether Wednesday’s news conference would go ahead.

Fury says a similar restriction originally appeared in his own contract but was removed because he wanted White involved.

Warren has taken a more pragmatic position. Speaking to BBC Sport before the latest dispute escalated, he said his understanding was White had helped secure the Netflix deal and compromises had been necessary to get the fight made.

On Saturday, White was generally non-committal on the future of the contest but much clearer in his criticism of Hearn. “The guy who is supposed to be helping the fight has been hurting the fight,” White said. “He hasn’t done the fight any favours.”
