World Cup 2026: Bellingham, Rice & Olise among players walking disciplinary tightrope

Published

on

Yellow cards picked up during the group stage were wiped before the last 32, so Rice’s caution in the goalless draw with Ghana is irrelevant in the knockout stages.

The same would have applied to Jarell Quansah, who was cautioned in England’s subsequent group game against Panama, but the Bayer Leverkusen defender will miss his team’s quarter-final through suspension after being sent off against Mexico – pending a possible England appeal.

Players who pick up two yellow cards across the last 32, last 16 and quarter-finals serve an automatic one-match ban.

If a player is cautioned in the last 32 and the last 16, he would miss their teams’ quarter-final. Bookings in either the last 32 or the last 16, and then the quarter-final, would rule him out of the semi-final.

Arsenal midfielder Rice was booked in the opening minute of the victory at the Azteca Stadium, while Manchester City duo Guehi and O’Reilly were cautioned after half-time.

Bellingham, player of the match against the co-hosts, was was shown a yellow card 19 minutes into the Three Lions’ victory over DR Congo.

However, as yellow cards are reset again after the quarter-finals, a player would only miss the final through suspension if he is sent off in the semi-final.

Players who are given their marching orders at the World Cup receive a one-match suspension.

This applies to both straight red cards and red cards that are the result of the same player being cautioned twice in the same game.

Fifa does hold the right to impose “further sanctions” if it deems it necessary.

Joao Cancelo is set to join Barcelona in a permanent transfer from Al Hilal following a successful loan spell at the Catalan club.

The Portugal international full-back will join Barca in a deal worth in the region of €10million and sign a two-year contract.

Cancelo joined Barca on loan in January for the remainder of the season, scoring two goals in 23 appearances and helping the club win the league title.

The 32-year-old, who was part of Portugal’s squad at this summer’s World Cup, had previously spent the 2023-24 campaign at the club on loan from Manchester City.

The right-back started all five games for Portugal at this summer’s tournament, but was taken off at half-time in the group-stage matches against Uzbekistan and Colombia.

He will become Barca’s second signing of the summer window following the €80m (£69.3m; $93.2m) signing of Antony Gordon from Newcastle United.

Robert Lewandowski left Camp Nou at the end of his contract to join Chicago Fire, while on-loan Marcus Rashford has returned to parent club Manchester United, while youth-team products Inaki Pena and Ansu Fati both left on permanent deals.

Cancelo signed for Al Hilal in August 2024 in a deal worth around €25m (£21m; $27.9m) after five years at City, where he won three Premier League titles.

He spent the second half of the 2022-23 campaign on loan at German club Bayern Munich, winning the Bundesliga that season before joining Barcelona in August 2023.

Pacers, Larry Nance Jr. reach agreement on 1-year deal

The Indiana Pacers have reached an agreement with free agent big man Larry Nance Jr. on a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum of $3.88 million.

Indianapolis is the latest stop on a well-traveled career for the 33-year-old Nance. A former first-round pick of the Lakers (No. 27 overall) in 2015, he has also played for the Cavaliers, Pelicans, Trail Blazers and Hawks. The 6-foot-6 forward-center played just 35 games last season in Cleveland, averaging 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds.

The team that makes the most sense for LeBron James

Esfandiar Baraheni

Nance has been more of a part-time player the past two seasons in Atlanta and Cleveland, as injuries have kept him on the shelf for long stretches. But at his best, he can help Indiana on the glass as a reserve four behind Pascal Siakam (and, sometimes, playing with Siakam and Ivica Zubac if coach Rick Carlisle opts for bigger lineups).

Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard undergoes shoulder surgery after offseason injury

Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard will miss at least the first month of the regular season after having surgery on his left shoulder for an injury suffered during an on-ice training session in Burnaby, B.C., last Thursday, the team announced.

Bedard had the surgery on Wednesday morning, the Blackhawks said. Team doctor Michael Terry said in a released statement, “We expect him to make a full recovery in an approximate timeline of four months.”

That puts Bedard’s projected return in early to mid-November. The 2026-27 season starts earlier than in recent years, in late September.

The 20-year-old Bedard, who turns 21 on July 17, is a restricted free agent. The Blackhawks gave him a qualifying offer in June. His next contract has been highly anticipated this offseason and could put him among the league’s top-paid players.

Last week, Bedard skated off the ice clutching his left arm after an awkward fall at Scotia Barn in Burnaby, where he was skating with other NHL players.

Bedard missed about a month with an injury to his other shoulder last season, after he was knocked down by the Blues’ Brayden Schenn during a faceoff in St. Louis.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson signaled that the team is ready to take the next step in its lengthy rebuild after acquiring defenseman Bowen Byram in a trade that sent the No. 4 pick to the Buffalo Sabres. But without Bedard, their leading scorer last year with 75 points in 69 games, the offensively challenged Blackhawks will be behind the 8-ball early. Either Frank Nazar or Anton Frondell — both first-round picks themselves — will take over as the team’s No. 1 center in his absence.

This story will be updated.
