SAG-AFTRA Recommends Members Opt-Out Of Meta’s AI Feature

Published

on

As Meta‘s new AI image feature sparks privacy concerns, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) is providing tips on how members can protect their image.

In a statement released Thursday by the union, SAG-AFTRA shared instructions on how to “dig into [Instagram‘s] settings” to opt-out of Meta’s newly unleashed Muse Image tool, in order to “protect your likeness.”

“Meta now lets anyone use your Instagram photos in AI images without your consent,” the guild shared in a statement. “SAG-AFTRA recommends that #SagAftraMembers (and all Instagram users) opt-OUT of Meta’s new AI image generation tool, Muse Image. Take action to protect your likeness.”

The post comes after the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) called for Meta to implement guardrails for Muse, despite the behemoth agency rolling out its own AI Vault program to archive its members’ likenesses forever.

“No one’s name, image, likeness, voice, or creative work should be used by any third party, including AI models, without clear, documented consent. True innovation puts creators first: respecting their rights, protecting their livelihoods, and giving them real control, not handing it over to platforms,” a CAA spokesperson said in a statement.

“Artists deserve to decide if and how their likeness and work is used, with consent and the ability to set their own terms,” the agency added. “This means letting creators impose restrictions, monitor usage, and prevent unauthorized endorsements or exploitation. Responsible AI requires clear disclosures and swift removal of unauthorized content. There must be easy ways to spot, track, and take down misuse, and it should be clear when something is AI-generated. CAA believes in the power of new technology, but not at the cost of individuals’ rights or livelihoods. The future of creativity depends on respecting the ownership and autonomy of those who make it possible.”

At its core, a Muse user just needs to tag a public or unprotected IG feed, and it instantly becomes meat for the AI generator to create its own images or “remixes,” as they are sometimes called, after which the images are available online permanently.

Meanwhile, Meta has downplayed the privacy concerns in its own statement. “We built Muse Image with strong controls and safety guardrails from day one. Private accounts and those belonging to users under 18 are automatically excluded and adult users with public accounts can opt-out with just a couple clicks. We will take action against any content that violates our Community Standards,” the company behind Facebook, Instagram and Threads said in a statement.

The use of AI in Hollywood continues to be a hot-button topic. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA has endorsed the Trump administration’s AI policy framework, which calls for Congress to enact legislation that includes parental controls, intellectual property rights protection, First Amendment protections, expanding AI workforce development, allowing data centers to generate their own power and removing legal barriers that limit AI innovation.

Last month, Trump signed an executive order for voluntary framework in which AI companies would provide the government with access to new models for a 30-day review period before their release.

‘Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma’ Cast Sets ‘Secretary’ Live Reading

Published

Nearly 25 years, Secretary will get a one-night-only revival by the director and cast of another erotic title, thanks to Film Independent and Mubi.

Jane Schoenbrun, writer/director of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, will direct the cast of their upcoming Mubi film in a live reading of the 2002 Steven Shainberg-helmed erotic romance, as part of Film Independent’s Live Read series, set for the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on July 28 at 7:30pm.

In a post on X, Schoenbrun revealed that Gillian Anderson will read the part of E. Edward Grey (originated by James Spader) and Hannah Einbinder will play Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal), while the director will read action descriptions. Additional casting will be announced soon.

Penned by Erin Cressida Wilson, Secretary (2002) has gone down as a provocative cult classic hailed for its humanizing depiction of BDSM, following a dominant lawyer (Spader) who enters into an erotic relationship with his submissive assistant (Gyllenhaal).

“Every Live Read is an opportunity to rediscover a great screenplay through a completely new perspective,” said Film Independent director of programming and events, Rachel Bleemer, in a statement to IndieWire. “Secretary is a bold, provocative film that continues to spark conversation more than two decades later. With Jane Schoenbrun directing and Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder leading the cast, this promises to be one of our most unforgettable Live Reads yet.”

Premiering Aug. 7, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma stars Einbinder as an enthusiastic young director who is tasked with resurrecting the Camp Miasma slasher franchise after years of subpar sequels and declining fandom. But when she visits the original’s Final Girl (Anderson), a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women become entangled a blood-soaked world of desire, fear and delirium.

‘Buddy’ Trailer: Cristin Milioti, Keegan-Michael Key Lead Horror Movie

Published

An orange unicorn has some tricks up his sleeve as the host of a children’s television show in the teaser trailer for Buddy.

Roadside Attractions releases director Casper Kelly’s horror-comedy movie in theaters Aug. 28 after its premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Cristin Milioti, Keegan-Michael Key, Topher Grace, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt and Michael Shannon round out the cast.

Buddy centers on the bright orange unicorn known for hosting a classic children’s program. When one child doesn’t feel like joining the fun, Buddy’s mood changes, and the seemingly perfect world proves to not be what it seemed.

The trailer splices moments of terror alongside scenes of the titular unicorn dancing with children on the set of his show, It’s Buddy!

Kelly, known for creating Adult Swim’s viral 2014 horror short Too Many Cooks, helmed Buddy from a script he co-wrote with Jamie King. Tyler Davidson, Drew Sykes, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz and Tracy Rosenblum serve as producers.

Executive producing are Kelly, King, Kevin Flanigan, Dexter Braff, Roberto Linck, Nathan McAuley, Emilio Schenker, Gideon Tadmor, Adam J. Wilde, Geoff Yaw and Ryan J. Kelly.

In his review of Buddy for The Hollywood Reporter, chief film critic David Rooney wrote that the movie “stretches its sketch-comedy idea to feature length by upping the gore and the demented detours but doesn’t go far enough to be as extreme or disturbing as it wants to be.”

Rooney added that the film’s “biggest plus is the inspired voice work of Keegan-Michael Key as the title character.”
