World Cup 2026: Hacking worry for Argentina FA over Egypt game emails

Published

on

Argentina’s football association has indicated it may have been the target of a cyber attack after emails from its official accounts reportedly criticised refereeing in the national team’s 3-2 win against Egypt at the World Cup.

The reigning world champions looked set for a shock last-16 exit when they trailed Egypt 2-0 but produced a remarkable late comeback to reach the quarter-finals.

Following the defeat, the Egyptian Football Association asked Fifa to banish from the tournament the French referee Francois Letexier and the team of officials who were in charge, alleging bias in favour of Argentina.

Argentine news outlet La Calle, external reported emails sent from the Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) account to journalists after the match stated “Argentina did not win” and the result was a result of “corrupt refereeing decisions”.

The publication said that AFA sources indicated a group of Egyptian-origin hackers were behind the emails, which also praised Egypt’s performance.

Responding to the incident, an AFA statement read: “We want to inform you that we have detected the possible sending of emails from one of our institutional accounts that were not generated or authorised by our team.”

It asked the public to “dismiss any message that you have recently received from our account and that is unusual, especially if it contains links, attachments or requests personal information”.

“There is a possibility that our account has been subject to unauthorised access, so we are working to clarify what happened and adopt the necessary security measures,” the AFA added.

Nicky Hayen: Burnley appoint Genk boss as head coach

Published

Burnley have appointed Genk boss Nicky Hayen as their new head coach on a three-year deal.

The 45-year-old Belgian replaces Scott Parker, who left by mutual consent at the end of April as the Clarets suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Hayen, who had a spell with Welsh side Haverfordwest County between 2021 and 2022, led Genk to a seventh-placed finish in the Belgian top flight last season.

“I’m pleased to be joining a club with real history and supporters who care deeply about it,” he told the club website., external

“I know most of them won’t know much about me yet, that’s fair and it’s on me to change it.”

The Clarets previously approached the Football Association of Wales looking to appoint men’s national team head coach Craig Bellamy, who was on the staff during Vincent Kompany’s time in charge, but the move collapsed during negotiations around the make-up of the backroom staff.

Former Wolves boss Rob Edwards also turned down an approach from the Turf Moor club to replace Parker.

Hayen will now join up with the team on their pre-season tour in the United States.

His first competitive match in charge will be the Carabao Cup first round tie against Notts County on Saturday, 8 August.

The first Home Run Derby at Citizens Bank Park will have massive star power from the local club.

Kyle Schwarber formally announced his entrance into the derby Friday, joining Philadelphia Phillies teammate Bryce Harper in the field for Monday’s event. They will be the first two teammates to compete in the derby since Schwarber and Javy Báez participated as Chicago Cubs in 2018.

It could make for some good entertainment.

The two sluggers have squared off in a derby before; Harper defeated Schwarber in the final round during the 2018 contest held at Nationals Park. Harper, then a Washington Nationals outfielder, won it at his home park.

Schwarber leads the majors in home runs with 32. He has smashed 219 of them in four-plus seasons since joining the Phillies. He took center stage at last year’s All-Star Game, breaking a tie game in a dramatic swing-off that Major League Baseball had never before attempted.

Schwarber is expected to have a Phillies coach throw to him. Harper, according to MLB.com, will have Dodgers third-base coach Dino Ebel throw.

Only two Phillies have ever won the derby. Ryan Howard did it in 2006, a year after Bobby Abreu won it in 2005.

Ebony Salmon: West Ham sign England forward after her exit from Aston Villa

West Ham have signed England forward Ebony Salmon on a two-year deal following her exit from Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old, who has four England caps, made 75 appearances for Villa before leaving upon the expiry of her contract at the end of the season.

Salmon began her career at Villa, progressing from their academy and into the first team before joining Manchester United in 2018.

“I’m really excited to join West Ham United and begin this next chapter of my career,” she said.

“After the conversations I had with Rita [Guarino] and others at the club, it just seemed like the right fit for me.

“I’m really looking forward to getting started, meeting all of my team-mates and the fans, and helping West Ham push on this season.”

Salmon spent a season on loan at Sheffield United and later joined Bristol City, before spells with Racing Louisville and Houston Dash in the United States.

She becomes the seventh summer signing for Guarino’s side after West Ham finished third from bottom in the Women’s Super League standings last term.
