World Cup 2026: England star Jude Bellingham slaps Argentina substitute Barco
Jude Bellingham slapped Argentina substitute Valentin Barco on the back of the head following England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat.
Barco, who did not play in the game, came on to the pitch at full-time and was hugging team-mates near Bellingham when the England midfielder walked over and slapped him.
It sparked a small melee as players from both sides got involved before Bellingham walked away.
It is not known what prompted the reaction, but footage showed Barco running on the pitch after Enzo Fernandez’s 85th-minute equaliser and celebrating in front of the England players.
Lautaro Martinez headed the winner for Argentina in the second minute of stoppage time, ending the hopes of an England side who had taken an early second-half lead through Anthony Gordon’s goal.
Barco, 21, who plays for French side Strasbourg and previously had a spell at Brighton, has featured once at the tournament as a second-half substitute in a 3-1 group win against Jordan.
The first half of Wednesday’s match in Atlanta was feisty with 19 fouls, as American referee Ismail Elfath struggled to keep control.
Bellingham, who has scored six goals in the tournament, also had a confrontation with Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the fourth minute after England midfielder Elliot Anderson had been fouled.
“We were really just discussing a foul, actually,” Bellingham is reported to have said. after the match.
“It wasn’t anything bad. I’m sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal, but it was nothing.”

World Cup 2026: Cristian Romero labels Gary Neville ‘stupid’ over criticism
Argentina defender Cristian Romero says Gary Neville was “stupid” to criticise his centre-back partnership with Lisandro Martinez.
In the build-up to Argentina’s dramatic 2-1 World Cup semi-final win over England, former Manchester United full-back Neville described Romero and Martinez as “the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world”.
Both were booked in Wednesday’s feisty last-four match in Atlanta, but they also played a significant part in England being limited to only two shots on target as defending champions Argentina came from behind to win with late goals.
Romero and Martinez, who are both 28, have started all but one of Argentina’s World Cup games this summer, helping Lionel Scaloni’s side reach their second successive World Cup final.
“The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid. Hopefully I won’t criticise a player or anyone,” Tottenham defender Romero told DSports when he was asked about Neville’s punditry comments.
“Because at the end of the day, we are doing our best for our national team. Sometimes it goes right for us, sometimes badly, but we are just happy to be in a World Cup final again.
“I think we are making history, for us it is something really huge, and we feel the significance of this shirt like no-one else.”
Manchester United defender Martinez had his own say, explaining: “We’re used to people always talking about us. It seems like they like doing it, and we respond on the pitch, that’s it, always with respect.”

Caitlin Clark yells in referee’s face in Indiana Fever defeat by Golden State Valkyries
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark yelled in the face of referee Gerda Gatling after decisions went against her team in a 88-75 defeat by the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA.
In the second quarter Clark, a three-time All-Star and one of the biggest names in women’s basketball, went for a lay-up and fell after contact from Valkyries’ Kiah Stokes. Clark appeared to be limping when she got up.
Team-mate Aliyah Boston was then called for a foul after Valkyries’ Veronica Burton bumped into her.
Using an expletive, Clark shouted at Gatling: “Give me a call. I got fouled five times.”
Clark, 24, left the court after the incident, but returned to finish the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
“You can’t miss calls like that,” she said.
“I had to play with a contusion on my leg for the rest of the game. It’s ridiculous.
“She [Gatling] said I initiated contact, which is fine. But you can’t knee me in the leg and knock me over.”
This is the second time in a month that Clark has complained about Gatling, while Fever head coach Stephanie White criticised referees last month for their officiating around Clark.
Clark was the number one pick in the 2024 Draft.
