Lorde Calls Out Spotify Over AI “About The Song” Feature: “We Don’t Want This”

Published

on

Lorde is calling out Spotify over a new feature that uses AI to give context to the song playing on the streaming service.

The “About the Song” feature, which is currently in beta, was released earlier this year and gathers information from third-party sources to give details on a particular song.

“Hey Spotify, I’m gonna go out on a limb [and] say we don’t want this,” Lorde said in a post on Instagram Stories where she shared a screenshot of the feature.

In the screenshot, Lorde’s song “Current Affairs” was playing, and the “About the Song” feature pulled from themusic.com.au to give details.

“On her Ultrasound World Tour, Lorde turns Current Affairs into a full-on performance piece, stripping down to underwear while a dancer pours water over her stomach so the song plays out like the shower scene she talks about on stage,” read the AI summary on Spotify.

Lorde added, “Not only is this inaccurate (not the song I did that in) but reducing a song to an AI generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation [in my opinion]. At least make it possible for artists to opt out please.”

Spotify has already removed the text from Lorde’s song, with Pitchfork sharing a statement from the streamer where they said, “We built ‘About the Song’ because fans want to dig into the stories behind the music. It’s still in beta. The info comes from articles across the internet, and when something’s off, we move fast to fix it, like we did here. Getting it right matters to us.”

Dom Taylor, the chef who won Netflix‘s Five Star Chef, has died. He was 44.

It was Taylor’s restaurant, The Good Front Room, that confirmed the “sudden passing” of the founder.

“Dom was a visionary whose bold, joyful approach to celebrating the Caribbean cuisine of his childhood brought a fresh and exciting voice to London’s restaurant scene,” read the statement on the website. “His passion, talent and generosity touched so many people, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him and experiencing his food.”

The statement continued, “He will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone whose lives he touched during this incredibly difficult time. We kindly ask that everyone respects the privacy of Dom’s loved ones at this time.”

The restaurant noted that they would remain open to “honor Dom’s legacy and continue the work he was so passionate about.”

Chef Taylor won the sole season of Netflix’s 2023 culinary competition Five Star Chef with his family by his side, celebrating the moment.

Ravneet Gill, who was a judge on the competition series, said of Chef Taylor’s death, “He was instantly captivating from the moment he stepped in front of us. He had a real sparkle in his eyes. He was warm, kind and incredibly talented. Dom cooked from the heart, and you could taste it. He was on the brink of so many exciting things.”

Fellow judge Mike Reid also paid tribute to Chef Taylor after news of his death saying, “Dom Taylor was one of the good ones.”

“What he built with The Good Front Room wasn’t just a restaurant. It was his heritage on a plate,” Reid added. “He took Caribbean cuisine somewhere it had never been in this country, and he did it his way. He was warm, funny and completely unpretentious about his talent.”

DGA, WGA & SAG-AFTRA Protest Emmys’ Decision To Cut Categories

Published

on

The DGA, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA have come together to push back on the decision to cut five categories — two acting, two directing and one directing — from the main Emmy telecast Sept. 14 on NBC.

“The Emmys exist to celebrate the best of television and the artists who are central to bringing these stories to life,” the three Hollywood guilds said in a joint statement. “The decision to eliminate these categories from the prime-time broadcast devalues the contributions of the talented people the Academy is meant to honor. An awards show dedicated to recognizing excellence should not reduce recognition for the artists whose work gives it meaning.”

The TV Academy announced earlier today that it plans to move the following categories from the live telecast to the Creative Arts Emmy Awards the weekend before: Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress In Limited or Anthology Series or a Television Movie, Writing and Directing for Limited or Anthology Series or a Television Movie as well as Writing For A Variety Series, which had been alternating with Writing For a Variety Special between the main and Creative Arts ceremonies.

In pursuit of stronger ratings that would allow the TV Academy to command larger license feels, the organization tried to remove one of the above categories, Writing For a Variety Series, from the main telecast on Fox and relocate it to the Creative Arts shows.

It didn’t go well. A fiery statement by the WGA on the day of the announcement was followed by a big lobbying effort by writers and late-night hosts that resulted in the TV Academy doing an U-turn and restoring the writing category on the live show.

In addition to applying pressure on moral grounds, the guilds have other levers to pull in the form of hundreds of thousands of dollars in royalty fees they wave for use on the main telecast contingent on it featuring a set minimum number of categories in each field.
