Episode 1170 of One Piece is another triumph of weekly animation prowess.

Before dessert, let’s eat our vegetables. The events this week are a diverse grab-bag of tones. Action, flashbacks, character moments, teeing up the big events to come – there’s bound to be some sliver of the runtime that appeals to you even if the whole thing doesn’t. For my money, I had a great time with all of it. The divided nature gives less time to really dig into any individual portion of course; despite that, I thought the net effect kept things entertaining and novel throughout.

The Scopper Gaban fight was terrific. It’s interesting how the high visual fidelity is normal to me now, as the Toei team has continued to set an incredibly high bar for themselves (especially in the post-Wano era). The fluidity of the movement, the expressive character work, the deadly feel of the attacks, and all the other minor details add together to create the kind of vibrancy once reserved only for films and OVAs. Everybody gets a bit of shine here, with Scopper showing us the old dude still has it, while Luffy and Zoro are just about to rev things up when things draw to a close.

The real star of the show for me was the environmental destruction. It was a very smart call to use the castle to shape the fight. The oversized pillars and railings provided interesting terrain for Luffy to jump around on or swing from, creating a good sense of movement and making an otherwise standard flurry-of-blasts type attack seem as though it was more of a tactical exercise. The use of the exterior shots was rather brilliant too. By cutting to shots outside the castle, it could add a moment where the viewer could register what their eyes had just seen, then have a giant explosion sell the scale of the attack. Plus the speed of the attacks when following Luffy juxtaposed with the time delay before they would hit the outer wall helped relay how tiny they are in comparison to the Elbaph castle.

Then, of course, the tumbling masonry became the transition piece to the other events. Shamrock and Gunko do moody bad guy things like summoning evil eldritch… knights?! Another fun sleight of hand where the contrast between the voices and the visuals helped add to the tension before the comedic pop of the knights realizing they had been transported unawares. It’s all around beautifully rendered and carefully executed (despite what the flurry of color and motion might lead one to believe).

Live-Action High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku Film Reveals 12 Cast Members – News

The official website for the live-action film of Ryō Nakama‘s High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku (Kōkōsei Kazoku) manga revealed 12 new cast members for the film on Thursday.

The film will open in Japan on January 8, a delay from the film’s originally planned fall 2026 opening.

Viz Media and MANGA Plus are both publishing the series in English digitally, and MANGA Plus describes the story:

Spring is in the air, and Kotaro is about to begin his first year of high school. He’s full of hope and anticipation of a wonderful life at his new school, only to have his dreams crushed by…his family?! Isobe Isobee Monogatari ~ Ukiyo wa Tsuraiyo creator Ryō Nakama‘s latest series combines family and school life gags, making it feel familiar but also fresh and new. This new genre of comedy will be sure to make the grade!

Tôichirô Rutô (live-action Violence Action, G Men, Ossan’s Love) is directing the film based on a script by Europe Kikaku‘s Makoto Ueda (The Tatami Galaxy, Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Penguin Highway).

Nakama launched the manga in Shueisha‘s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in September 2020 and ended the series in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2023. Shueisha published the11th and final volume in July 2023. Viz Media is also publishing the manga in compiled volume form digitally.

Nakama previously published the Isobe Isobee Monogatari ~Ukiyo wa Tsurai yo~ manga in Weekly Shonen Jump from October 2013 to October 2017. The manga inspired two net anime series and a stage play.

Parasyte Gets New Parasyte: Tamiya Live-Action Series on Netflix in 2027 – News

Netflix announced on Thursday that it is developing a new live-action series based on Hitoshi Iwaaki‘s Parasyte (Kiseiju) manga. The new series, titled Parasyte: Tamiya, will stream on Netflix globally in 2027.

The anime is based on the character of Ryoko Tamiya, a key character in the original Parasyte manga. Netflix describes the story:

This new series tells the story of Ryoko Tamiya, a very levelheaded and “human” parasite who begins to question how, or if, parasites and humans can coexist. Seen through Tamiya’s eyes, the world of Parasyte becomes a lens on survival, identity and what it really means to be human. In the original manga, Ryoko Tamiya is a parasite who takes over the body of a high school teacher and becomes an antagonist for Shinichi Izumi. Initially a brutal parasite that attacks humans indiscriminately, Tamiya learns a great deal about humanity through her job as a teacher. Upon seeing Shinichi and Migi sharing a body, she begins to think that coexistence with humanity will give her species the best chance at survival.

Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool, live-action Detective Conan, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Neko Atsume House) stars in the anime as Ryoko Tamiya.

Yeon Sang-ho, who directed the previous Parasyte: The Grey series, is credited as planner, and is also co-writing the script alongside returning scriptwriter Ryu Yong-jae. Kensaku Kakimoto (live-action Glass Heart) and Kazuhiro Nakagawa (live-action Double, Hakubo no Chronicle) are directing the series. WOWPOINT also returns to develop and produce the series.

Parasyte: The Grey (Kiseiju: The Grey), the South Korean live-action adaptation, debuted worldwide on Netflix in April 2024.

Iwaaki’s original manga was serialized in Kodansha‘s Afternoon magazine from 1990-1995.

Kodansha USA published the series in English. The company also published the Neo Kiseijū tribute manga series under the title Neo Parasyte m in 2017, which features stories by different artists, including Ohta. The tribute manga ran from September 2014 to March 2016 in Kodansha‘s Afternoon magazine.

The manga most recently inspired a television anime adaptation in 2014, and two live-action films in 2014 and 2015.

Moare Ohta debuted the Parasyte Reversi (Kiseijū Reversi) action-horror manga based on the original series on Kodansha‘s Comic Days service in March 2018, and ended it in May 2021. Kodansha published the manga’s eighth and final compiled book volume in July 2021. Kodansha USA publishes the series in English.

I’m Dating a Dark Summoner Anime’s Character Video Highlights Imp – News

The Deregula anime label began streaming a new character video for the short anime of Shaoh‘s I’m Dating a Dark Summoner (Dark Summoner to Dekiteiru) manga on Wednesday. The video highlights the character Imp.

The company is releasing two more character videos over the next two days.

The fantasy manga’s story begins when Amona, a demi-human dark summoner who uses the power of demons, joins the party of the righteous cleric Roni. Everyone thought that they would be at each other’s throats within a minute, but by the end of Amona’s first day in the party, they share a passionate night together.

WWWave Corporation‘s Deregula anime label is producing the anime. WWWave Corporation owns the ComicFesta web manga service, as well as the AnimeFesta anime programming block.

Shaoh launched the manga in Kadokawa‘s Dra Dra Sharp# online manga magazine in 2021. Kadokawa published the manga’s seventh compiled book volume on March 9.
