‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Passes ‘Avengers: Endgame’ With Record $72 Million in Box Office Previews

A box office record once believed to never be broken might fall this weekend, as Sony/Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has earned an unbelievable $72 million from Thursday preview screenings, shattering the previous preview record of $60 million set by “Avengers: Endgame” in April 2019.

On that weekend seven years ago, “Endgame” grossed $357 million domestic and $1.2 billion worldwide, capitalizing on 11 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe narratives to achieve a launch that many thought would never happen again. But with this start, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is firmly within striking distance of that record.

The fourth “Spider-Man” film starring Tom Holland has also earned sterling audience scores across the board, including an A on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 91% critics and 98% audience. With this rave reception and a lack of major box office titles in August, “Brand New Day” has everything it needs for a global theatrical run of more than $2 billion.

Combined with the third weekend of Universal’s “The Odyssey,” “Brand New Day” should also set a new record for the highest overall domestic weekend in box office history, which reached $402 million on the launch weekend of “Endgame.” Such a result would push domestic grosses for the year to date past the $6 billion mark, making it all but certain that it will reach $10 billion by year’s end for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Frank Miller Praises ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: “Fans’ Dream Come True”

Frank Miller is full of praise for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The comics icon took to Instagram to share his feelings about Sony’s latest Tom Holland adventure, calling the film, “The most Ditko movie yet and with my Hand in it for all to celebrate. This fan’s dream come true. Tom Holland is my forever Spider-Man as romantic as he is heroic. Congratulations to Destin and the whole team.”

“The most Ditko movie yet” refers to Steve Ditko, who co-created the Spider-Man character with Stan Lee and drew the early comics. Ditko’s Spider-Man was a more grounded, street-level take on the character, something critics are saying about Brand New Day as well. His reference to his ‘Hand’ in it likely refers to The Hand — a ninja organization that appears in Brand New Day and was created by Miller during his Daredevil run.

Miller, who famously wrote The Dark Knight Returns and Batman Year One for DC, has sometimes been a tough critic of comic book movies over the years. In 2014, Playboy asked Miller about the “lousy” movie adaptations of Daredevil and Elektra. “When people come out with movies about characters I’ve worked on, I always hate them,” Miller said. “I have my own ideas about what the characters are like. I mean, I can’t watch a Batman movie. I’ve seen pieces of them, but I generally think, No, that’s not him. And I walk out of the theater before it’s over.”

When asked if that includes Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Batman trilogy, Miller replied, “It includes all of them. I’m not condemning what he does. I don’t even understand it, except that he seems to think he owns the title Dark Knight. He’s about 20 years too late for that.”

Miller added during a Reddit AMA, “They could do Citizen Kane and I would find something wrong with it.”

Longtime Spider-Man comic book writer, J. Michael Straczynski, also had some praise for Brand New Day, writing on X: “To be clear I’ve enjoyed all the Spider-Man movies. But for my money, this latest iteration feels most authentically Peter, and Spider-Man. So many comic movies have fallen into MacGuffin plots, looking for the code, the stone, the box, the sword…this one is all about what William Faulkner called ‘the human heart in conflict with itself.’ It’s a very human story, emotional without being slow or dull or self-indulgent. It feels like stepping into a really good Spidey comic. Well done to all concerned (and even those unconcerned).”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters and is tracking toward a massive box office opening, estimated to reach around $465 million globally.

Rebecca Hall Joins Netflix Series Based On Dan Brown Novel

EXCLUSIVE: Rebecca Hall (The Beauty, The Listeners) has officially been cast as the female lead, Katherine Solomon, on the untitled new Netflix series based on the world of Dan Brown’s novel The Secret of Secrets. She will star opposite her husband, Morgan Spector, who will play the character Robert Langdon.

Deadline first revealed Hall was in talks to join the series earlier this month.

In the 2025 novel, symbologist Robert Langdon races against ancient forces and time to rescue a missing scientist and her groundbreaking manuscript whose discoveries have the power to forever change humanity’s understanding of the mind. Katherine is a scientist and Langdon’s girlfriend in the book.

The series adaptation from Brown and Carlton Cuse “will blend futuristic science with mystical lore, delivering on the heart-pounding suspense and international intrigue that has made the Langdon stories a global phenomenon,” the streamer touted.

Cuse and Brown are co-creators and executive producers of the series adaptation, with the former also serving as writer and showrunner. Emma Forman of Cuse’s Genre-Arts also executive produces the project with Zoe Robyn, which landed at Netflix in May 2025 with a straight-to-series order.

The Secret of Secrets was published by Doubleday on September 9, 2025. Langdon has been featured in five previous books: Angels & Demons (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Lost Symbol (2009), Inferno (2013), and Origin (2017). Tom Hanks played Langdon in the film franchise by Ron Howard, which has grossed approximately $2.24 billion worldwide as of 2025.

Jimmy Fallon Gets 52 Spideys in Times Square to Re-Create Meme

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is now in theaters, and to celebrate, Jimmy Fallon re-created one of the most famous Spider-Man memes out there. But, the NBC host brought in a lot of Spideys to do it.

For those unfamiliar, the meme in question shows Spider-Man pointing at a second Spider-Man, and has since been used as a “pot calling the kettle black” meme in pop culture. It originated from the 1967 animated Spider-Man series, specifically from an episode called “Double Identity,” wherein Spider-Man runs into a criminal pretending to be him. The two point at each other, and thus, the meme was born.

So, Fallon decided to celebrate the newest movie by doing his own rendition of the meme.

“We’re going to set the record for most Spider-Mans pointing at each other in Times Square,” he revealed, wearing a full Spider-Man costume. “Let’s do this. My spidey senses are tingling.”

Indeed, the fake Spider-Man then hit Times Square, immediately ran into another spidey performer, and the two began pointing. From there, even more Spider-Men flooded out, forming a circle and all pointing at each other. In total, there were 52 heroes out to re-create the meme.

It’s not the first time that fans have been treated to a real life version of the joke. In fact, Sony and Marvel did it themselves, onscreen.

In “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” all three live action Peter Parkers — Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland — unite briefly in the same universe. In one scene, Ned (Jacob Batalon) calls out for Peter, only for all three to look up, and immediately begin pointing at each other to see who he meant.

Additionally, the three actors did a whole, proper photoshoot behind the scenes to re-create the meme as well.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is now in theaters everywhere.
