State Department Map Incorrectly Labels African Countries at AIDS Conference
The U.S. State Department acknowledged Thursday that a map of Africa used during a presentation at an international AIDS conference this week incorrectly labeled the countries it highlighted, calling the mistake “an unfortunate error.”
The map was displayed during an event at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro. It referenced Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi and Cameroon, but none of the countries shown was correctly identified by the lines connecting their names to their locations. Nigeria, which has a coastline, was depicted as landlocked, while Mozambique was placed in the Horn of Africa despite being located in southeastern Africa. Côte d’Ivoire was also shown on the wrong side of the continent. Uganda and Malawi were roughly in the correct areas but had inaccurate borders, while Cameroon appeared in the map’s legend but was not shown on the map itself.
The incorrect map first went viral after being shared in a Substack post by AIDS expert Emily Bass. According to Reuters, which analyzed the images, the map also contained “an artificial intelligence watermark that signals it was made with OpenAI tools.”
“The U.S. government’s failure to catch this error before displaying the slide at the top international AIDS conference in the world, in a session that featured the Director General of Nigeria as an invited guest, is not only disrespectful to African collaborators, it’s also a significant tell,” Bass wrote in the Substack post.
The State Department acknowledged the mistake in a statement to media outlets, calling it “an unfortunate error caused by a team member who hastily altered the slide deck immediately before the presentation at the AIDS 2026 Conference.”
“We take full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation it caused for attendees, including our African partners,” it continued.
The speaker was later identified as Jeff Graham, a top U.S. health official who oversees an initiative known as the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR.
Naturally, the mislabeling drew widespread criticism online and within the AIDS community. Kenneth Ngure, the president-elect of the International AIDS Society, shared his frustration with the error, calling the mislabeled map “disheartening.”
“African countries must be taken seriously,” he said in a statement to The New York Times. “The African continent continues to bear the greatest burden of the H.I.V. pandemic, and our focus must now return to advancing the H.I.V. response.”
The Trump administration has significantly rolled back global health funding in several areas, including H.I.V. prevention and treatment efforts. The cuts in 2025 were expected to have a significant impact, with the results expected to be presented at the conference later this week.
The State Department did not immediately return TheWrap’s request for comment.

Meghann Fahy to Star in HBO’s The Trial of Louise Woodward
Meghann Fahy will star in the HBO limited series “The Trial of Louise Woodward,” from creator Matthew Barry and director Susanne Bier, the network announced Thursday.
The five-episode series follows the true story of how in 1997 “an 18-year-old British au pair was accused of shaking to death a baby left in her care by her American host family, setting off an international media firestorm as the trial unfolds in full view of both the British and American public,” according to the official logline.
The project reunites Fahy and Bier, who previously worked together on the Netflix limited series “The Perfect Couple.” It also brings Fahy back into the HBO fold after her Emmy-nominated turn in “The White Lotus,” and Barry, who previously wrote on “Industry.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Matthew Barry and Susanne Bier on this new series and to welcome Meghann Fahy back to the HBO family. Matthew’s compassionate approach to this gripping true story, paired with Susanne’s powerfully distinct directorial vision and Meghann’s exceptional talent, has brought together an extraordinary creative team whose work we’re excited to share with our audience soon,” Francesca Orsi, HBO drama head, said in a statement.
“The trial of Louise Woodward raised profound questions about childcare, working mothers, class, and the role of an emerging 24/7 media,” Barry said in a statement. “Thirty years later, those questions feel more urgent and relevant than ever. I’m grateful to be working with Susanne and our partners at HBO to bring this story, in all its complexity, to the screen.”
Barry serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Bier directs all five episodes and also executive produces the project. Other executive producers include Big Lights Productions founder Frank Spotnitz, Emily Feller, Tobi de Graaff and Antoine Douaihy.

Ransom Canyon Can’t Beat House of the Dragon on Streaming Charts
The Samba weekly Wrap Report streaming chart has taken on an aerial theme lately, as high-flying predators are perched high on the chart for the second consecutive week.
Once again, “House of the Dragon” on HBO Max is the most-watched streaming program, and “The Hawk,” on Netflix, is second.
Despite the shared talons and wings of their titular creatures, these two programs couldn’t be more different in terms of subject matter and tone. “House of the Dragon” is, of course, the prequel series to the murderous monoculture mega-hit “Game of Thrones.” Now in its third season, the fantasy series is one of TV’s biggest draws, claiming the top spot three weeks in a row and four times in five weeks.
Meanwhile, “The Hawk” is a comedy about a pro-golfer looking to reestablish himself after a few lost years. Alas, there is no raptor here: Will Ferrell plays the title character, Lonnie Hawkins, aka “The Hawk.”

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television, sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
In third place this week is the buddy action comedy “Ride or Die” on Prime Video. The pairing of Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham climbs three spots in its second week on the chart.
“Ransom Canyon,” the Netflix western starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, debuts in fourth place as it returns for its second season.
In fifth place, the HBO Max satire “Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” continues to chug along, moving up two more spots in its third week on the chart.
Netflix’s “Little House on the Prairie” slides down to sixth place after peaking in third last week. Despite becoming something of a culture war flashpoint, the show has maintained strong viewership, appearing on the chart for three straight weeks.
As we move along from “Larry” and “Little” we come to “Lucky” in seventh place. The Apple TV+ miniseries starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a con artist on the run has slowly been building up an audience and rises three spots on our chart.
“Elite Force,” in eighth, is the latest in Netflix’s long line of foreign language hits. This time, the action-thriller arrives from France.
Sticking with Netflix, “I Will Find You” held steady in ninth this week.
Closing out the chart is “Silo,” which appears on the chart for the first time this summer. Similar to “Lucky,” “Silo” has been slowly building steam. The sci-fi series returned for its third season on July 3 and cracked the Top 10 just now, after airing its fourth episode.

On the linear side of the chart, “America’s Got Talent” continues its tight grip on the top spot. But that’s hardly the most interesting thing about the chart.
Look down a few spots and we find “True Lies” on CBS. Not only is the action drama the only scripted show on this summer linear slate, it’s also a series that CBS cancelled back in 2023 after it failed to find an audience. Three years later, the series is the sixth most-watched linear program of the week, showing that anything’s possible in this topsy-turvy modern TV landscape.
The rest of the linear chart is a who’s who of classic game shows and competitions: “Wheel of Fortune” is second, followed by “Jeopardy!,” “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and “Celebrity Family Feud.”
“American Ninja Warrior” is seventh, “American’s Funniest Home Videos” is ninth, “Dancing WIth the Stars: The Next Pro” is ninth, and “The Price is Right” closes us out in tenth.
