Lawrence O’Donnell: Trump ‘Controls Nothing,’ Including His Plane

Published

on

Lawrence O’Donnell reacted to reports that President Donald Trump was forced to take a secret military plane in July in response to an Iranian assassination threat, with the MS NOW anchor remarking that America’s commander-in-chief “controls nothing.”

“Donald Trump has lost control and he knows he has lost control,” O’Donnell said on Monday night. “Donald Trump has lost control of everything he thought he could control. He lost control of his war in Iran as soon as he started it. He’s lost control of the Republican legislative process in Congress.”

“Something else Donald Trump has lost control of: His choice of airplane, and it’s much worse than we thought,” he added. The “Last Word” host went on to relay the details of a new report from The Washington Post, which claimed that Trump secretly flew out of Turkey after a NATO summit in July on an alternate military aircraft amid assassination threats from Iran.

According to The Post, Trump swapped planes by riding secretly in a catering truck. Not even the journalists and some of the staff aboard Air Force One that night were reportedly aware that the president was not with them on the plane. O’Donnell also noted the grounding of Trump’s Qatari-gifted jet, which was meant to become his new Air Force One before being sidelined in the wake of security concerns.

“Just imagine what a loss of control Donald Trump must have been feeling in Turkey when he was told that he not only could not fly on the Qatari jet that he illegally accepted as a gift from a dictator, but that he could not fly on Air Force One,” O’Donnell mused.

In the second half of his Monday night segment, O’Donnell turned his attention to something else Trump seems to have little control over: the war in Iran.

“We are now at Day 164 of the war that Donald Trump started and cannot control,” he said. “Trump wanted this war to be over in days. Donald Trump’s initial public estimates of how long his war would take were given in days and sometimes, at the most, in weeks. He never said it would take 164 days.”

As talks between the U.S. and Iran remain unproductive, O’Donnell noted recent reports that Iran may be nearing a deal with neighboring Middle East country Oman that would potentially formalize some of Iran’s claims of control over the Strait of Hormuz. O’Donnell pointed to those reports as evidence of yet another failure on Trump’s part.

“On Day 164 of Donald Trump’s war against Iran, Donald Trump has achieved nothing and Iran is now closer to achieving something it has never had before: control of the Strait of Hormuz,” he concluded. “While Donald Trump controls nothing.”

QVC Host Who Had Viral Freudian Slip Delivers Wig to Jimmy Fallon

Published

on

After going viral for a Freudian slip on live television last week, QVC host Toni Brattin stopped by “The Tonight Show” to make good on a promise to host Jimmy Fallon. But, she also made another lewd joke.

For those who missed it, Brattin was doing a segment selling wigs on QVC, when she accidentally said “blow job” instead of “blowout.” The former, of course, is a sexual reference, while the latter is a real hairstyle. Following the incident, Brattin appeared on TMZ, and happily called out Jimmy Fallon’s monologue joke about her, while promising to deliver him his own wig.

So, on Monday’s episode of “The Tonight Show,” she did just that. But first, Fallon had some questions about how she even messed up in the first place.

“Did you just think you were off screen?” he wondered. “What did you think in that moment?”

“I was kind of frozen, and I was trying to decide, do I go to the left? Do I go to the right? I just went down!” she said.

Naturally, the double entendre prompted even more laughter from Fallon, who warned Brattin that “you’re in trouble again!” But he quickly played along; when Brattin placed his new wig on his head, Fallon joked “I’m blown away.”

To properly kick off the show, Fallon and Brattin then turned around to finish their final lines, just as Brattin did on QVC.

You can watch the full exchange from “The Tonight Show” in the video above.

‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ Trailer: Ella Beatty Wields A Mean Axe

Published

on

Netflix has released the first trailer for the latest chapter in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan‘s anthology series Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story.

The haunting 56-second clip begins with a theater curtain opening to reveal a nearly empty stage with just a piano and the C key playing repeatedly by itself. The scene then shifts to an ominous voiceover: “Lizzie Borden had an axe. Gave her mother 40 whacks.” We don’t see Lizzie but we hear the repeated wielding of an axe aimed at what is assumed to be her mother. The clip ends with a stunned-looking blood-covered Lizzie and another voiceover saying “When Lizzie saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.”

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story tells the story of how one young woman changed what the world believed a killer could be… all it took was an axe. The installment follows Ella Beatty‘s Lizzie, the series’ first female “monster,” alongside Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan, Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden, and Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden.

Per the official logline: When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge. The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world—they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.

The cast also includes Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Barden.

The Lizzie Borden Story is created and written by Brennan and executive produced by Murphy, Brennan, Max Winkler, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, Louise Shore, Nissa Diederich, Todd Kubrak, Carl Franklin and Tanase Popa. Winkler and Sarah Adina Smith direct.

It’s set to premiere September 17 on Netflix. Check out the trailer above.

Free Seminar Teaches Documentarians When and How to Opt Out of AI

Published

on

Audiences need to be able to trust the footage they’re seeing when they’re watching the news or a documentary. But increasingly, popular video editing software includes AI functionality that you as a filmmaker may not know is there, let alone how you turn it off.

An upcoming seminar will address those concerns and help educate journalists and documentarians about when to opt out of AI and exactly how to do so. Field of Vision and Freedom of the Press Foundation are launching the sixth installment of their Digital Security Clinic, a free, online series of courses aimed at helping documentary filmmaking professionals and journalists with their digital footprint, IndieWire can reveal exclusively.

The clinics have over five years helped support over 500 filmmaking teams to date, and some of the early interest in this edition of the seminar is already surpassing last year’s edition.

This year’s Digital Security Clinic features most notably a new session titled “When and How to Opt Out of AI,” set for September 10, a session that Field of Vision co-creator Charlotte Cook told IndieWire was a much-requested topic from users of the site. She sounded the alarm on tools that may use AI in subtle ways, whether for things like auto correct or how they’re integrated into search engines, so it’s important for filmmakers to know exactly what their process is, prove that they have authored something, and do so for audiences who need their own trust in the media.

“Filmmakers have to be able to protect the imagery, what they’re working with, the footage, and be able to stand behind it knowing that there’s no influence that they don’t know about,” Cook said.

The trainers from Freedom of the Press as part of the session will step attendees through how to turn off certain AI features within editing tools and apps, where can they upload footage to protect it from AI crawling, how to tell whether things have been enhanced or edited, and more.

“It’s how to have a risk assessment as you evaluate AI tools and how things integrate,” Cook said. “It will even look at things like transcription services, how to protect your intellectual property and make sure that it is your intellectual property. One of the challenges we’re finding is, where is ownership in some of these tools? Some of them are changing user policies and making sure we’re protecting across the board that intellectual property.”

That’s just one session of five being offered over the next month however. Other sessions will highlight digital security, being able to communicate securely when traveling across borders or in sensitive areas, how to determine safe storage and encryption methods for your footage, and how to minimize your digital footprint including removing private material from your personal social media accounts.

Field of Vision offers a variety of resources and guides on these topics at https://www.digitalsecurity.film/. See the full schedule from the Digital Security Clinic below:
