Why Julie Andrews Won’t Return for ‘Princess Diaries 3’

Julie Andrews is confirming that she will not appear in Princess Diaries 3.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter alongside her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton about their new children’s book Shy, the actress explained why she doesn’t see herself returning for the third film with Anne Hathaway.

“I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now,” Andrews told THR. “I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days — [writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers. But truly, I don’t think I should be a part of it.”

Though Andrews says it’s “still lovely to be working on things,” she prefers not doing work “necessarily on camera.”

“It isn’t that I’m not enthusiastic for it. It’s just that I really don’t feel I should be part of it now,” she explained.

When asked what she’d like to see the third film explore, Andrews said she wasn’t sure but noted Hathaway is older now too from the second film.

“Actually don’t know. I think it proceeds from the second Princess Diaries. It moves on, but by now Annie too is a little older than she was when she did it. I’m interested to see what Meg [Cabot] and Annie and everybody comes up with,” she said.

The original Princess Diaries film recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. When asked what surprises her the most about its longevity all these years later, Andrews told THR, “I’ve not really given it thought that way. I mean, I’m thrilled, and it was well-made by dear Garry Marshall, who was the sweetest director you could imagine and funny and talented and considerate. So it was a very enjoyable film to make.”

It was announced in 2024 that a third film will see Anne Hathaway reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, Queen of Genovia. For the third installment, Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride) will direct the feature. Debra Martin Chase, one of the producers of the original, returns to produce. Naia Cucukov, who is Lim’s producing partner, is an executive producer, as is Melissa Stack.

“The fairy tale continues,” Hathaway wrote on her Instagram back when the third film was initially announced.

“I read a script, and it was amazing. I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much,” Princess Diaries author Cabot told THR of the film. “They don’t like it when you tell people what’s gonna happen yet. So I was like, ‘Better not send me any more scripts!’”

Despite the third film being recently announced, Cabot told THR that discussions to return to The Princess Diaries universe never really stopped: “It has been in discussions for a really long time. There have been a lot of scripts, and I think this one that I most recently read is my favorite. Fingers crossed that’s the one they’re going to use, but it’s a really fun idea, and I’m 100 percent behind it.”

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, Hathaway was asked by host Andy Cohen for an update on the film. However, she confirmed things have paused amid her pregnancy.

“I’m busy making baby No. 3 and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3,” Hathaway said. “But I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”

Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Weekend 3 Preview

To date, there’s only been six movies to crack the $700 million mark at the domestic box office, and we’re about to get a seventh one Wednesday with Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day. As of Tuesday, the running cume of the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie was an estimated $671.2M, with close to $17M made Monday. Tuesday is always bargain ticket day, so expect a daily gross around Monday’s number.

Brand New Day will become the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe title to cross $700M stateside after Avengers: Endgame ($858.3M), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.8M) and Black Panther ($700.4M).

The third weekend of Brand New Day will be rich enough to lead the domestic box office again with an estimated take between $57M-$72M, down anywhere from 50%-60%. Avengers: Endgame eased 57% in its third frame, and we can’t use 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home as a comp since that pic fell 34% in its third session, which had the cushion of a New Year’s weekend. The best third weekend ever for a movie at the North American box office belongs to Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $90.2M, followed by 2009’s Avatar with $68.4M.

Before kids fully go back to school, Warner Bros has the Bad Robot PG-13 dinosaur movie The End of Oak Street, about a neighborhood that winds up coinciding with a pre-historic jungle. Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor and booked at an estimated 3,400 theaters, the expectation is for a start between $20M-$25M on this $80M net production. The Hathaway factor is showing a strong first choice among women, though unaided tracking is behind such PG-13 monster movies as The Meg and Rampage.

Previews start at 1 p.m. Thursday for the movie from It Follows filmmaker David Robert Mitchell. The pic has PLF screens, while Imax is a share between Brand New Day and The Odyssey, the latter of which is looking to do $17M-$20M in its fifth weekend.

Paramount and Spin Master have PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, which will pull in toddlers and moms. It’s already banked $25M overseas from 30 territories and should do in the mid- to high-teens this weekend at 3,500 sites. It’s always about the tail with these movies on Paramount+ and in regards to the Melrose lot’s co-share on merchandise money. There was already a Saturday preview that will be rolled into Thursday previews, which start at 2 p.m.. The last film in the franchise, 2023’s PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie owns the best domestic franchise debut with $22.7M, which legged out to $65.3M. Since Paramount has had theatrical on the franchise it has grossed more than $374M worldwide from two movies including 2021’s PAW Patrol: The Movie.

Also bowing this weekend is Angel Studios’ drama The Brink of War at 2,000 theaters. Jeff Daniels plays Ronald Reagan in the pic, trying to save a nuclear deal with Jared Harris’ Mikhail Gorbachev. Black Bear has Andrew Patterson’s sophomore feature, bluegrass-music infused crime caper The Rivals of Amziah King, in 500 sites, boosted by a big push in the heartland and South. The 2025 SXSW world premiere title is 95% certified fresh, and reps Matthew McConaughey’s return to cinemas (the last time we saw him on the big screen was in 2020’s Guy Ritchie title The Gentleman).

Neon has the Dylan Meyer-directed stoner comedy The Wrong Girls starring Kristen Stewart, Alia Shawkat and Cate Blanchett. No RT critical score yet. Per Rentrak, the movie is expected to have a moderate footprint with around 500 locations.

‘The Office’ Star Lucy Davis Reveals She Has Incurable Cancer

Lucy Davis, best known as Dawn Tinsley in the UK version of The Office, has revealed that she is terminally ill.

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, Davis, 53, told her 590,000 followers that she has incurable cancer after discovering a lump on her breast. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, which metastasized to her bones.

“As of now, I’m trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can. I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard,” she wrote.

“The thing that has been most vital to me is humour. I asked my friends and family to make fun of me as much as possible (which they’re really good at), and most importantly of all to not treat me like a sick person.”

Davis said the pain from her condition can be acute at times, while standing and walking is not always easy. But she wants to continue acting and doing animal rights work.

“For those of you on a similar journey to mine, I do wish you well. Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose,” she said.

Davis shot to fame in The Office, playing the receptionist at paper merchant Wernham Hogg. A nation cheered on her will-they-won’t-they relationship with Tim Canterbury (Martin Freeman), with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant ultimately writing a happy ending for the duo. Tinsley was a character who ultimately gave rise to Jenna Fischer’s Pam Beesly in the U.S. series.

Mackenzie Crook and Martin Freeman recently eulogized about her performance in the BBC special Mackenzie Crook and Martin Freeman Remember… The Office. Crook described it as a “beautiful” and “subtle” performance that captured the hearts of British viewers. “The Tim and Dawn stuff with her… was f*****g joyful,” Freeman added.

Davis has also starred in Wonder Woman and Shaun of the Dead.

‘Josephine’ Trailer & Release Date: Gemma Chan & Channing Tatum In Sundance Hit

“Josephine, can you tell me what you saw?”

Those seven words solidify the premise for Josephine, sophomore writer-director Beth de Araújo’s drama that has major awards buzz after landing the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award at Sundance in January. Today we got our first trailer for the film — watch it above — along with its theatrical release date.

Thge official logline: After 8-year-old Josephine (Mason Reeves) accidentally witnesses a crime in Golden Gate Park, she begins to act out violently to protect herself. This emotional trauma leads to conflicts between her parents (Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan) as they search for justice and a way to feel safe again.

The trailer is short on dialogue but long on tension as the parents struggle with how their little girl is dealing with sudden emotional upheaval. But not everyone is on the little one’s side. To wit, one grownup asks the third-grader, “If what you say you saw was so bad, why did you just watch from behind a tree?”

The double Sundance win fired up awards-season watchers, who recall that Best Picture winner CODA and nominee Minari and turned the same trick in 2021 and 2020, respectively.

In a competitive environment, Ash Avildsen’s Sumerian Pictures paid mid-seven figures to acquire U.S. rights to Josephine in February. The self-described “artists-led independent creative studio” has set a limited theatrical release for the awards-season sweet spot of November 20. The rollout will expand nationwide on December 4.
