Tottenham: Cristian Romero says ‘I wasn’t perfect’ before making Atletico Madrid move

Published

on

Cristian Romero has said he “wasn’t perfect” during his five years with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentina centre-back is set to complete a move to Atletico Madrid after they agreed to pay Spurs £34.2m for the 28-year-old.

Romero’s last game for Tottenham was against Sunderland in April, when he left the field in tears with a knee injury that would rule him out of Spurs’ last six Premier League games.

The team were in a relegation battle and Romero upset fans by planning to be in Argentina for their final game, to watch his first club Belgrano play in the Primera Division Apertura final.

He ultimately returned to England to attend Spurs’ 1-0 win over Everton, which meant they stayed up and finished 17th for a second consecutive season.

“I know I wasn’t perfect,” Romero posted on X., external “But one thing gives me peace: I always gave everything. I defended this shirt with pride and with all my heart.”

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and became a mainstay in their defence, making 156 appearances.

His best moment with Spurs was helping the club win their first trophy in 17 years as they beat Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history,” Romero added.

“I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.

“I’m leaving the club, but a part of my heart will always remain here. Once I was one of you. Today, I leave as one of you forever.

“With all my love and respect. Thank you for everything.”

Bring your questions for a special contracts edition of our MLB mailbag

Published

Who’s the free agent your team needs to sign for 2027? The extension that needs to get done yesterday? The best or worst contract on your squad?

This week’s mailbag is all about contracts. With the trade deadline behind us, we’re gearing up for an offseason of unmatched uncertainty. We’ve got purported contenders falling on their faces this season, the best free-agent starting pitcher in years and an otherwise underwhelming class that will force teams to get (buzzword alert) “creative.” Oh yeah, there’s also the likelihood of a lockout and a prolonged pause in transactions (and perhaps regular-season games) come December.

So hit us with your plan to revitalize your local nine or your questions on how much it might take to lure that big fish to or keep your up-and-coming star in town.

We’ll be back next week with answers and comments to our favorites.

Chelsea winger Dastan Satpaev has joined Burnley on a season-long loan.

Satpaev has signed signed a six-year contract with the option of a further 12 months at Chelsea after officially joining the Premier League club from Kazakhstan outfit Kairat Almaty upon turning 18 this month.

The Kazakhstan international has immediately moved to Burnley, where Chelsea expect him to be a starter for the 2026-27 campaign, and the nature of his loan deal reflects this anticipated status at the Championship club.

Satpaev made 58 appearances for Kairat Almaty, recording 26 goals and 10 assists. He featured in five of their eight Champions League matches last season, including fixtures against Real Madrid and Inter, and scored in the 3-2 defeat by Copenhagen.

He scored the opening goal in Chelsea’s pre-season 6-4 win against Western Sydney Wanderers, having been given special permission by Kairat and his parents to go on tour as a trialist, aged 17.

Burnley are being led into the new campaign by former Club Brugge coach Nicky Hayen, and lost a number of key players following their relegation from the Premier League last season.

Satpaev’s arrival follows the departures of wingers Jaidon Anthony, Luca Koleosho and Loum Tchaouna, joining Brentford, Paris FC and Coventry City respectively.

Burnley’s Championship campaign gets underway at home to West Ham United on Sunday.
