Deion Sanders’ lawyer moves to quash subpoena, issue protective order

Published

on

The attorney representing Colorado coach Deion Sanders filed a motion to quash a subpoena served on Sanders, which would require him to testify at the upcoming bankruptcy trial for his son, former Colorado safety Shilo Sanders.

In a court filing Thursday, attorney Harvey Steinberg not only moved to dismiss the subpoena, but also requested a protective order on behalf of Sanders to prevent future subpoena attempts by the plaintiff in the case against Shilo Sanders, who owes John Darjean, a former high school security guard, more than $11 million in damages. Darjean filed a lawsuit in 2016 stemming from a 2015 incident at a school in Dallas where Shilo was a student.

In 2023, Shilo Sanders filed for bankruptcy with $11.89 million in debt. Darjean and his lawyers claimed in court documents that Shilo Sanders didn’t properly disclose his assets when he filed. His trial is scheduled to begin on Aug. 31 in Denver, Colo., three days before Colorado’s season opener at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. In 2022, Darjean, who contended the altercation caused lifelong debilitating physical issues, won the nearly $12 million default judgment in Texas after Shilo Sanders failed to appear at the trial.

Steinberg also claimed in Thursday’s filing that neither he nor Sanders have officially been served the subpoena for the upcoming trial. That contradicts a previous filing from Wednesday that stated that Steinberg accepted the subpoena on behalf of Sanders.

In a response to the subpoena filing on Aug. 19, Steinberg wrote that if presiding Judge Michael E. Romero determines that Sanders’ testimony is relevant, they would try to make Sanders available to “appear virtually for any testimony.”

The subpoena, however, “commands attendance within 100 miles” of where Sanders lives and is employed.

Romero will determine whether the looming debt is a result of what Romero described in a court filing last week as “a willful and malicious injury.” Shilo Sanders, who was 15 at the time, has claimed he acted in self-defense.

In Thursday’s filing, Steinberg accused Raphael of trying to pressure Shilo Sanders into allowing potentially inadmissible evidence, in part to reduce the burden on his father. Steinberg also accused Raphael of misrepresenting to the court that Sanders had been served with a trial subpoena.

Steinberg added, “the fact is that Mr. Sanders does not possess any information that is relevant or admissible to the narrow issue before this Court.”

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Department told The Athletic earlier this week that a deputy attempted to serve Sanders papers on the morning of Aug. 11, when the Buffaloes had an open fall practice at Franklin Field.

Usain Bolt: Olympics icon registers to play for Manchester Sunday league team

Published

on

Eight-time Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt has registered to play for a veterans’ Sunday league football team in Manchester.

The Football Association’s Full-Time website has the 40-year-old Jamaican as a registered player for Wythenshawe Vets FC, who play in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans Football League.

The over-35s team based in south Manchester attracted attention last year for assembling a squad full of former Premier League players.

Wythenshawe’s squad for this season includes former professionals such as England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey, Everton striker Oumar Niasse, Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia, Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse, Manchester City duo Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha and Premier League title winners Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater.

Bolt is the fastest man in history over 100m and 200m, having set the world records for both distances at the 2009 Athletics World Championships.

After retiring from athletics in 2017, he pursued a career in professional football.

In 2018 Bolt scored twice in a friendly for Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners, and signed a contract with the club after rejecting a two-year offer from Maltese side Valletta, but left just eight weeks later.

Wythenshawe, who have not officially announced Bolt’s registration, have been contacted for comment.

England vs Pakistan: Michael Vaughan says he “fears” for Pakistan after Headingley defeat

Published

on

Former England captain Michael Vaughan says he “really fears” for Pakistan and felt “quite sad” watching their heavy defeat by England in the first Test at Headingley.

Pakistan were thrashed by an innings and 103 runs in the series opener – batting for 85.4 overs across both innings combined.

A side that has produced some of the sport’s most fearsome bowlers were also meek with the ball and poor in the field.

“They’ve been absolutely blown away,” Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special. “They’ve been hammered. I’ve never seen them look so timid.

“The tactical side wasn’t there. The skill level and the class between the sides, Pakistan look a long way short.

“I hope they can find something over the next couple of days.

“They’ll get criticised and rightly so, hopefully that will force them to find something.”

Pakistan have long been known for their turmoil off the field and their current struggles were perhaps best summed up in the post-match news conference.

Stand-in skipper Salman Agha laughed he is “more than happy” to hand the captaincy back to Babar Azam for the second Test, which starts at Lord’s on Thursday.

A decade ago they were top of the Test rankings while iconic teams in the late 1980s and 1990s, featuring all-time greats such as Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, won three Test series in a row in England.

Now they are bottom of the World Test Championship, have lost five of their past six Tests and 14 defeats from 19 Tests going back to December 2023.

Former captain Ramiz Raja told TMS he “fears the worst”.

“The first pillar has fallen, and that’s the fans, they are disenchanted, they aren’t going to back this team and who would?” Raja said.

“If you lose 17 Test matches in the last 20 you’ve played nobody’s going to back this team.”

Vaughan added: “I look at this side and feel quite sad watching them this week.

“I’ve seen many Pakistan sides play and this side just seem to be lacking all that spirit and fight we’ve come accustomed to seeing.”
