Why Ibrahim Mbaye is Aston Villa’s €55m player of choice to be the face of a new era

Published

on

This is an updated version of an article which first appeared on The Athletic this month.

For those who are not regular watchers of France’s Ligue 1, your first introduction to Ibrahim Mbaye may have been his sensational solo goal at the World Cup for Senegal against France.

It may have only been a consolation in a 3-1 defeat, but it saw Mbaye become the youngest African player to score at a World Cup, aged 18 years and 143 days.

And setting records for becoming the youngest to do something has been part of the right-winger’s routine since he became Paris Saint-Germain’s youngest league starter (16 years and 205 days old) when he was selected to play against Le Havre in August 2024.

Born in Trappes, a western suburb of Paris, he chose to represent Senegal — where his father is from — at senior international level, despite representing France through the youth levels up to under-20s. He became his nation’s youngest player to appear at the Africa Cup of Nations in December 2025 and their youngest goalscorer in the tournament when he scored against Sudan in the round of 16.

It is no wonder that the now-18-year-old had been looked at by several of Europe’s top clubs since he broke through at PSG. Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool and Aston Villa were three of the teams that explored a move for the winger this summer, but senior club sources at Liverpool insisted it had gone no further, dismissing reports that personal terms had been agreed.

Villa, in the meantime, had viewed Mbaye as a leading target from as early as January. They had wanted him then, but could not afford him due to ongoing financial restrictions limiting their spending.

They made contact again a few months later, believing a deal would cost £40million-£50million (about $61m). It became evident it would be towards the top end. There was a feeling among those close to Mbaye heading into the summer that Villa may have missed their opportunity.

Still, Villa’s priority position was a fast, right-sided winger who made frequent runs beyond opposition defences. Mbaye was always the player favoured across the board.

Negotiations were complex. The forward is represented by London-based agency Golden Gate, but this year, he enlisted the services of Jorge Mendes and his agency Gestifute before a potential summer move.

Each time Villa felt they were close, or a deal was likely, they were pushed back. Even after the signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, Villa never closed the door on Mbaye. Representatives of other targets, in messages seen by The Athletic, were informed that Villa were not pursuing players who primarily operate as traditional left-wingers. Mbaye’s best position was viewed as off the right.

Mbaye’s arrival seemed out of reach, with Villa pursuing Rafael Leao intently. But the relationship between Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was seen as key to getting the deal done. On Friday, a €55million (£47m; $64m) agreement in principle was finalised.

As for Leao, the player wished to join, but Villa could not reach the required financial package, having only offered an informal proposal of a loan plus an obligation. In the end, Villa never made a formal offer for the 27-year-old.

Mbaye has had quite the rise for a youngster whose first sporting love was not football — he preferred basketball. His father, Abdoulaye, showed him plenty of football videos and his interest grew. He joined Guyancourt, a local club in Yvelines. He then moved on to Versailles, which has a reputation for having a well-run academy.

His talent and potential were enough for PSG to get involved, and they brought him into their academy system at the age of 10. His rise continued, and by 16 he was playing for the under-19s, helping them win the Championnat National U19 title in 2024. He received the club’s Titi d’Or award, given to the most promising player in the club’s academy, in the same year.

In the summer of 2024, Mbaye was given the opportunity to train with the first team and left such an impression that head coach Luis Enrique started him in the first league game of the 2024-25 season. He made 10 appearances in all competitions and was on the bench as PSG won the Champions League for the first time.

He saw an increase in his involvement last season, making 30 appearances in all competitions. If a reminder of his age was needed, it came in September 2025, when Mbaye could not travel with the squad for an away game against Marseille because he had to sit an exam. He joined up with the squad later in the day instead, and came on as a very late substitute.

The youngster is still a raw prospect who is developing, but his youth brings a fearlessness when he is in possession. He is right-footed and has predominantly played on the right wing, but is comfortable operating on both flanks.

He uses his acceleration and excellent turning to get out of tight spaces rather than into physical duels where opponents can dominate him. He frequently looks to drive forward with the ball, which often leads to chance creation rather than shooting opportunities for himself.

Mbaye does look to get to the byline and provide the textbook low cutback for a team-mate, but his low cross volume (5 out of 99) and high link-up play (86 out of 99) in the graphic above suggest he profiles more as a quick-passing inside forward rather than a touchline-hugging winger.

It must be noted that his 997 league minutes last season are still a relatively small sample size, so an increased role at a new club would help paint a clearer picture of the multi-faceted attacker.

Mbaye was involved in PSG’s pre-season, scoring in a 1-1 friendly draw against Manchester United, but he was an unused substitute in the French side’s 2-1 UEFA Super Cup victory over Villa. The forward, alongside team-mate Bradley Barcola — who is also at the centre of transfer speculation — was then left out of the squad that was beaten 1-0 by Lens in the Trophee des Champions and the squad for PSG’s opening game of the league season against Rennes.

His future may have been uncertain for much of this summer, but his talent is not, and that is why he is an enticing prospect. Emery said Villa were in “rebuild” last week — they hope Mbaye can be the face of the club’s next era.

Umpire’s ABS nightmare: Bill Miller has 8 pitches challenged, each one overturned

Published

on

By the end of Friday’s 10-8 win over the Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds were celebrating, Chicago was reeling with deep questions about its bullpen, and home plate umpire Bill Miller was left wondering where everything went wrong.

That’s because the 27-year veteran umpire and crew chief went 0-for-8 on ABS challenges, three by the Reds and five by the Cubs. Just nine plate appearances into the Friday matinee, Miller was charged with his first ABS challenge, on an 0-1 four-seamer from Cincinnati starter Rhett Lowder on the corner that should’ve been called a strike.

By the end of the ninth inning, eight in all were called, all overturned. Of those eight, only two were initially called strikes.

Cubs catcher Carson Kelly challenged four pitches, and Reds backstop Jose Trevino had two calls overturned. Each team had one successful challenge from a batter, the Reds’ Sal Stewart and the Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki.

None of the challenges were initiated by Cincinnati backstop Tyler Stephenson, whose 88 overturns on 124 challenges lead all of baseball. Stephenson and Brewers catcher William Contreras are the only two players with at least 80 successful challenges this season.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time this season that Miller has drawn the ire of the Reds.

In the seventh inning of a mid-July game, Reds second baseman Edwin Arroyo ran into Miller while trying to field a grounder, leading to an extended inning for Caleb Ferguson. The left-hander did not take too kindly to Miller impeding his defense and the Mariners’ broadcast caught Ferguson’s expletive-filled tirade.

The very next day, Ferguson apologized for his actions, noting that he would seek out Miller to make things right.

“It’s just a very unprofessional thing on my part,” Ferguson said. “I know these things happen in the game, but I don’t like that I was kind of the centerpiece of what was going on.”

Using data gleaned from TapToChallenge.com, a website that tracks Automated Ball-Strike developments, Friday’s game at Wrigley Field is believed to be the worst since MLB introduced the ABS challenge system this season, as none of the eight challenges raised against Miller stood as called.

Even so, the distinction for the most challenges overturned against an umpire belongs to Clint Vondrak. In a June 8 game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Athletics, Vondrak faced 16 challenges and 11 were overturned (five from Milwaukee and six from the Athletics).

Miller can rest easy knowing that he did not set the record for most overturns in a game — he’s tied with Andy Fletcher, who had eight overturns in an April 1 game between the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals.

To his credit, Miller only ranks ninth in total number of calls overturned with 70. Hunter Wendelstedt, Dan Iassogna, Malachi Moore, Lance Barrett and Manny Gonzalez, in that order, lead the league in total number of overturned challenges.

“These umpires have a really, really, really difficult job,” Reds rookie Sal Stewart told The Athletic at the All-Star Game. “I only have to know my zone; they need to know the whole league’s zone. … I just want to say, man, the umpires have done a great job. This system, it’s not easy. They have to know a lot of people, different heights.”

‘The Athletic Football Show’ previews the 2026 New York Giants

“The Athletic Football Show” is previewing all 32 teams leading up to the start of the 2026 NFL season. Below are select quotes from the show’s preview of the New York Giants. The quotes are edited for clarity. You can watch the whole preview on YouTube and in the embedded video below, or listen to the full NFC East preview wherever you get your podcasts.

Robert Mays on what he’s watching the first month of the season: What is this offense? Coming into it, I think there’s an inclination to believe Matt Nagy, we’re going to be in the gun. We’re going to do some RPOs. It actually fits with Jaxson Dart’s skill set. Let’s do some of that. They come out in the preseason, the first three plays were under center, two-back, downhill runs, which I guess makes sense. Greg Roman is there. Patrick Ricard is there. So that’s my question. What is the offense? What do they want to be? What is the identity? What sort of stuff do they lean into? What sort of personnel groupings do we see with this team?

Dave Helman on what’s keeping him up at night: Jaxson Dart is what keeps me awake at night, because I can’t decide how I feel. He was 12th in EPA per dropback when he was throwing outside of the pocket, 20th when you account for just inside-the-pocket throws. He was second among all quarterbacks in rush EPA behind Josh Allen and tied with Patrick Mahomes for the most 10-plus-yard rushes.

If you tune into Dart, every other snap you’re over-the-moon excited, or you’re convinced he’s going to play his way out of the league in a year-and-a-half. I don’t know what to do with it. I think it’s worth saying again, he barely got to play with Malik Nabers. And so what does it look like if you have a real WR1 stabilizing things and hopefully giving you an easy out in your offense? If I felt better about the play caller, I’d probably be willing to just dive in and go whole hog. That’s not to say Matt Nagy can’t do a good job, but it’s not inspiring by any means.

Derrik Klassen on what would be a successful season for the Giants: If you feel some amount of confidence going into year three with Jaxson Dart, even if it’s not perfect. And, if we still care about you by Thanksgiving. If you’re a team that we still care about and you have a shot by Thanksgiving, I think that to me is probably success.
