We have a busy day’s racing on Monday with flat action from Wolverhampton and Yarmouth, live on Sky Sports Racing…

2.25 Yarmouth – Legacy Link’s sister Zhuri takes on Never An Angel

Legacy Link’s full-sister Zhuri takes on debutant Never An Angel for Ed Walker who cost 460,000gns as a yearling.

The well-related filly Zhuri comes here for her second racecourse start, this time dropping to seven-furlongs after shaping well without seeing out the trip, dropping back in distance looks to suit her.

Ed Walker is 15 per cent with his two-year-olds this year and comes here with the 460,000gns No Nay Never-filly Never An Angel, with Kieran Shoemark taking the ride.

Baaeed has made a bright start to his stallion career and is represented here by the William Haggas-trained filly Faithful who is from a good family, being a half-sister to Italy for Aidan O’Brien and Bowmark, who shares the same connections.

Another beautifully bred runner, Lady Jemima is the most experienced in the field, with three starts to her name already, latterly producing an encouraging effort at Newmarket and she should progress again for the James Owen team.

8.30 Wolverhampton – Powder Monkey looks to complete a hat-trick

Powder Monkey looks to complete a hat-trick in the Race & Rest – Wolverhampton Holiday Inn Handicap, after wins at Wolverhampton and Lingfield.

He returned to the track after a break with a win at Lingfield Park in August, off a mark of 69. That victory pushed him up to 74 and he since went on to defy favouritism readily in the hands of Billy Loughnane. He is up to a mark of 78 today and the champion jockey-elect takes the ride again.

Dublin Bay won by seven lengths here back in May and was slapped with a ten-pound penalty for the effort. He has run with credit in deeper company on two starts since but will do well to overcome stall 12 off the same mark.

The top-weight Alfra Whiteburd landed a hat-trick at Pontefract in the summer for the Ivan Furtado team and hasn’t lost much in defeat in two starts since but he returns to the All-Weather this evening and his four wins on this surface give him a chance.

4.05 Yarmouth – Box To Box and Cuff It take on eight rivals

Top-rated Box To Box and Cuff It will take on eight rivals in this competitive Haven Seashore Holiday Park Handicap.

Box To Box is without a win in his last five starts and is down to a mark of 87 but looked to have the race at his mercy last time at Chester, striking the front at the furlong pole before being run down close to home. Another bold show can be expected.

Cuff It is the most unexposed in here, just four career starts to his name. He had his handicap debut last time out at York in a competitive class two contest but found that company too hot. Back in a class four event today, he could run well.

Lucky Hero is in-form, having won two of his last three runs, his hat-trick bid was thwarted last time out as he was beaten a short margin into third after winning at Newmarket. Another big effort can’t be dismissed.

Best of the rest

1.50 Yarmouth – Awwjaan who is Irish 1000 Guineas-entered returns.

3.35 Yarmouth – Wootton Bassett-filly Endless Quest begins her career.

4.05 Yarmouth – Box To Box and Cuff It lock horns.

4.26 Wolverhampton – Interesting Lion Of God makes nursery debut.

Deauville – Nine race card.

Lifeline for LIV Golf with potential $300m investment as league looks to continue into 2027 | Golf News

Published

on

LIV Golf has secured a potential $300m windfall from BC Partners Credit as it looks to continue into 2027.

The league lost its multi-billion-dollar funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) following the end of the 2026 campaign and filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States in September.

LIV hopes a court-supervised “restructuring process” can be completed early next year.

Current participants, who are owed millions of pounds, have no obligation to sign on for LIV 2.0 should it materialise.

Ted Goldthorpe, partner and head of BC Partners Credit, said in a statement: “Our goal is to facilitate LIV Golf’s emergence from the restructuring process on sound financial footing and with renewed momentum heading into the 2027 season.”

BC Partners Credit will support the next stage of LIV, under which players would become equity owners of both the league and its teams.

Major winners Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith are among the players who signed on with LIV following its creation in 2021 having been lured over from the PGA Tour.

Those golfers are some of the creditors listed with unsecured claims – Rahm heads that with 7.5m (£5.5m).

LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil said: “This investment is an important ‌step forward for LIV Golf, and I want to thank Ted Goldthorpe and the entire BC Partners team for their conviction in what we’re building.

“We believe ‌deeply in the future of this league and in the opportunity to build something distinctive alongside our players.

“We’re delivering on our major milestones, and while there is still work ahead, today marks meaningful progress toward a player-owned, team-focused, truly global league that complements the wider game and creates new opportunities for players, fans, partners, and the next generation of golfers.”

Anthony Gordon: England and Barcelona winger shrugs off consistency concerns to become key figure for club and country | Football News

Published

on

It feels a long time ago that Anthony Gordon’s place in the England line-up was not assured.

It took until the final pre-World Cup warm-up with Costa Rica, where Gordon scored one and set up another, for him to really nail down his spot for the tournament opener with Croatia. Even then, many of the Sky Sports writers were yet to be totally convinced.

But barely three months on, he has become an integral name on Thomas Tuchel’s team-sheet and one of his most valued attacking players.

Since a slow start to that World Cup, something has clicked. Blanks in England’s first two games against Croatia and Ghana saw him dropped for the must-win final group match with Panama, but on his return he set up both of Harry Kane’s goals in the comeback win over DR Congo. He has never looked back.

Another assist against Norway plus a crowning goal in England’s biggest game, the semi-final with Argentina, have brought the country and, perhaps, Gordon himself along too.

The Barcelona winger is now on a four-game international scoring streak – the longest of any player in the current set-up and of anyone not called Harry Kane in almost six years.

That would be an impressive run for any player, not least one whose attacking output was so openly questioned right up until the eve that summer tournament. There are few questions about it at the moment.

Gordon had struggled to recreate his best moments for his club in an England shirt until the finals, but now has 10 goal involvements in his last 10 games for his country as part of potentially the most in-form front four in international football.

His reputation was not helped being under the Premier League microscope in a tough final year at Newcastle, where he managed just five non-penalty goal involvements in the Premier League. It understandably framed judgement over his ability – but only two seasons earlier he had produced four times that figure in his first campaign on Tyneside.

He is a victim of recency bias to an extent, and told ITV ahead of this latest international camp that his “quality and football IQ” had not been respected by fans in England before moving to Barcelona. It remained in him from his better days but consistency, not talent, has long been the biggest concern for Gordon’s coaches.

There was enough belief around Barcelona that they could get Gordon back to his best that even before the World Cup, sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick had followed Tuchel’s lead to look beyond his Premier League struggles to sign him ahead of Marcus Rashford, despite paying more than double what his England team-mate would have cost.

It went under the radar more widely, but not to them, that only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe netted more than his 10 goals in 12 games in last season’s Champions League, including against his future employees in the League Phase.

Perhaps it is ironic that in Gordon’s recent interview he complained he was only valued for his work-rate and speed before moving to Barcelona, days after Deco told RAC1 in Spain it had been the winger’s “intensity’ which had attracted them to him in the first place.

But the 25-year-old has undoubtedly taken his game to the next level and proven himself in ways he had not before over these last few months on the domestic and international stage.

Prior to that Costa Rica showing he had produced only two goals and an assist in his first 18 England games.

With what we have seen since, there is no question he can step up in the biggest games. When England have needed answers, he has delivered, both in a World Cup semi-final as well as his strikes in the Nations League against Spain and the Czech Republic which were both match-changing interventions.

Gordon has always had the self-belief. That was clear the moment he revealed at his Barca unveiling he felt he would play for the club since the age of three, and had clearly been preparing long enough to deliver his speech in assured Spanish.

That World Cup run can have only built his confidence further, plus the tag of becoming the first Englishman signed permanently by Barcelona since Gary Lineker, 40 years ago.

He has hit the ground running at the Nou Camp, with fans’ interactions already going viral on social media as they immediately warm to a player who has managed four assists in his first six LaLiga matches – double the number he laid on across his final season in the Premier League and the joint-most in the division this season.

Deco has made a point of publicly encouraging Gordon to improve his finishing, but his goalscoring run for England suggests that too will follow in time.

Whether he can keep up his bright start in Catalonia or his goalscoring form for England, or if long-term consistency remains his greatest struggle, will only be found out in the fullness of time.

But if he can, both club and country will have a serious player on their hands.
