Catherine Hardwicke to Direct Bronte Studios’ Western ‘American River’

Published

on

Catherine Hardwicke will soon be heading Down Under.

The veteran filmmaker has been tapped to direct American River, a female-led Western for Bronte Studios. The project is set to start shooting in Australia during the second quarter of 2027. Casting is said to be underway already on the project with veteran casting directors Lisa Beach and Sarah Katzman leading the charge to find the ensemble cast. They have a long list of credits that spans multiple genres like comedies (Wedding Crashers, Horrible Bosses), dramas (Walk the Line), action pics (Logan), Westerns (3:10 to Yuma) and TV (Altered Carbon, The Detour).

Penned by Eric Esau, American River is being produced by Bronte Studios’ Blake Northfield and Michelle Krumm, and Shaun Goodman in association with MEW Films. Set at the dawn of the Gold Rush in California in 1848, American River follows four women from vastly different backgrounds as they are thrown together by circumstance and forced to navigate a world where fortunes are being made, laws are being rewritten and survival often belongs to those prepared to take matters into their own hands. It’s described as a dangerous journey through the “overwhelmingly male world” of the state’s goldfields where a fight to reclaim their homestead becomes a battle for survival.

“As a Texan, I love the scale and mythology of the Western, but what excited me about American River is the opportunity to come at that world from a completely different perspective,” Hardwicke explained in a statement. “These four women have very different reasons for being on this journey. They aren’t setting out to become heroes they are trying to survive and take control of their own futures. Against the extraordinary landscape and danger of the Gold Rush, that gives us the opportunity to make something emotional, physical and genuinely cinematic.”

Bronte Studios’ Northfield and Krumm explained what attracted them and their company to board the project: “What drew us to American River was the opportunity to make a Western that delivers everything audiences love about the genre extraordinary landscapes, horses, gold, danger and action while putting four women at the centre of that world. Catherine has an incredible ability to combine intimate character storytelling with scale and energy, and we couldn’t imagine a more exciting filmmaker to bring this story to life. Lisa and Sarah are now putting together the ensemble, and we’re excited to see who they discover to inhabit these extraordinary roles.”

More news on casting and production is expected in the coming weeks.

Hardwicke comes to the project after most recently directed Street Smart, which recently debuted at the Catalina Film Festival. She is best known for directing the first Twilight installment, as well as her other credits like Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, Miss You Already, Miss Bala and more.

Aerosmith Sets Comeback Concerts At Hollywood Bowl With Many Special Guests

Published

on

Just as so many big-name rock acts are on farewell tours, at least one is making a live comeback. Ending what was billed as a permanent vacation from the concert stage, Aerosmith on Wednesday announced a pair of shows set for October 29 and November 1 at the Hollywood Bowl — with a little help from a lot of friends.

Along for the return ride will be a slew of other acts ranging from Heart, the Black Crowes, Run-D.M.C., Billy Idol and his longtime guitarist Steve Stevens to Sammy Hagar, Guns N’ Roses veterans Slash and Duff McKagan and members of Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, Godsmack, among others. See the full lineup below.

But there’s one oddity in the announcement: It doesn’t name any of Aerosmith’s members.

That is key because frontman Steven Tyler has battled voice problems in recent years, and drummer Joey Kramer was absent from the Boston group’s most previous tour — which was billed as a farewell. But the photo above was included with the announcement, and it features all five members of Aerosmith’s classic lineup: Tyler, Kramer, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton.

And here’s a teaser that was posted to Aerosmith’s socials on Tuesday:

It’s been more than two years since Aerosmith retired from touring. The group announced the “Peace Out” farewell tour in May 2023, but it was halted abruptly that September due to Tyler’s vocal cord and larynx problems. The postponed dates were rescheduled, but the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band said “no more, no more” in August 2024.

That appears to have changed.

Aerosmith has amassed 17 platinum albums since 1970 while flooding airwaves with such classic songs as “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Back in the Saddle,” “Last Child,” “Janie’s Got a Gun,” and a slew of rock ballads including its lone No.1 pop single “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” penned by Diane Warren for the 1998 movie Armageddon. After a mid-career lull in the 1980s, the band rocketed back with three consecutive albums from 1987-93 that sold at least 5 million copies each: Permanent Vacation, Pump and Get a Grip

Along with those mentioned above, here are the other acts scheduled to play with Aerosmith on at least one of the two dates: Andrew Watt, Chad Smith, Eric Church, Jerry Cantrell, Marcus King, Mike Inez, Nuno Bettencourt, Pat Monahan, Sully Erna, Tom Morello, Adam Wakeman, Audley Freed, Kenny Aronoff. Producer and Was Not Was frontman Don Was will serve as music director.

Ticket presales begin tomorrow, October 8, followed by a regular sale on October 10.
