Discovery+ Raising Prices After Skydance Merger

Published

on

As it begins its second week as a bulked-up public company, Skydance has raised prices of stand-alone streaming service Discovery+.

The base-level, ad-supported tier now costs $6.99 a month, up $1, and the “ad-light” higher tier is $11.99, a $2 increase.

Skydance was formed from the merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, which officially closed last week. The new company is saddled with nearly $80 billion in debt and has pledged to whittle it down along with delivering $6 billion in cost savings. Along with back-end efficiencies, real estate sales and layoffs, higher streaming rates are expected, in keeping with inflation across the media sector of late.

Discovery+, which features programming from a range of cable networks, has remained a stand-alone since its launch in 2021. It initially was priced at $4.99 for the base tier and $6.99 for the plan with fewer ads, offering 50,000 hours of programming from networks like TLC, Discovery, HGTV and the Food Network.

After former parent Discovery Communications merged with WarnerMedia in 2022, the new parent looked at combining Discovery+ with HBO Max and went so far as to rebrand the latter as Max to reflect a broader content offering. Audiences and partners balked at the mixture of upmarket HBO fare with lifestyle and unscripted fare, and the corporate bosses preserved Discovery+ as a lower-priced option for consumers. In part because the company does not commission originals for Discovery+, it has been profitable for most of its existence.

HBO Max announced a round of price hikes last fall, with the basic ad-tier rising $1 to $10.99 a month and the popular Standard plan climbing to $18.49.

Reinaldo Marcus Green Launches Film Fellowship At NYU Tisch School

Published

on

EXCLUSIVE: King Richard and Bob Marley: One Love director Reinaldo Marcus Green has launched Office Hours, a new filmmaker fellowship at his alma mater the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The fellowship has also selected its inaugural class of five filmmakers who are all recent alums or current students in the graduate film program.

The fellowship, created to provide emerging filmmakers with access, mentorship and candid conversation about the creative and professional realities of building a career in film, will bring its fellows together with Green for a series of intimate sessions throughout the academic year on topics like developing a voice, choosing material, working with actors and collaborators, navigating representation and relationships, dealing with setbacks, and building a sustainable career.

This year’s cohort — Alex Jiang, Maissa Lihedheb, Skyla Page, Andre Shen and Taylor Sanghyun Lee — were selected by a committee of filmmakers including Kasi Lemmons, John Tintori, Chiara Bernasconi and Mia Cioffi Henry. (See details about the inaugural class below.)

“When I was coming out of NYU, what I needed as much as anything was access — someone I could call, ask the questions I didn’t know how to ask, and have an honest conversation about what this career actually looks like,” Green said.

He added: “Office Hours is my attempt to create that space for the next generation of filmmakers. These five filmmakers already have extraordinary voices. My job isn’t to tell them what kind of filmmakers to become. It’s to listen, challenge them, share what I’ve learned, and hopefully help them get where they’re trying to go.”

Green directed 2021’s King Richard, the story of the rise of tennis’ Venus and Serena Williams and their father-coach. The pic scored six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and earned star Will Smith the Best Actor Oscar. He follow that up co-writing and directing 2024’s Bob Marley: One Love. His credits also include the TV series We Own This City and Netflix’s Top Boy.

His debut feature, Monsters and Men starring John David Washington, Anthony Ramos and Kelvin Harrison Jr., world premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

He’s now working on Sky’s TV adaptation The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, on which he directs and executive produces.

“Having this kind of guidance from an established filmmaker like Rei is an incredible opportunity for our students and recent alumni as they navigate their first steps in the industry,” says Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, chair of the Tisch Department of Graduate Film.

Below are more details on this year’s fellows, per Office Hours:

2026 Animation Power List: ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, ‘Bluey’ and More

Published

on

Animation has never been bigger or more difficult to pin down. In the past year alone, a K-pop-fueled Netflix phenomenon swept the Oscars, a Chinese sequel became the highest-grossing animated film of all time and a stick-figure animator built an audience of 34 million-plus without ever setting foot in a studio. Meanwhile, a family of Australian blue heelers is teaching parents around the world how to raise their kids. Animation’s center of gravity isn’t just shifting — it’s multiplying.

THR

Which is why The Hollywood Reporter is launching its first-ever Animation Power List, a representative snapshot of the most important and influential figures working in animation today, across film, television and online.

Box office and ratings matter, of course, and plenty of the names here have the billions to prove it. But commercial success is only part of the equation. We also weighed the more subjective, harder-to-quantify question of influence: Who is setting the aesthetic agenda, shaping the business models, launching new talent or simply making the rest of the industry look over its shoulder? We tried to strike a balance, pairing the studio heads and A-list directors who steer the biggest projects with the character designers, animators, FX supervisors and art directors whose craft, all too often, goes unsung.

This is a snapshot, not a definitive ranking or a comprehensive census. In a business this big and this global, someone is bound to have been unjustly left off. To those we missed: We’re sorry, we’re big fans and there’s always next year. Consider this an opening sketch.

‘Baywatch’ Reboot Full Trailer Release Ahead Of January 2027 Premiere On Fox

Published

on

Fox released the full trailer for the Baywatch reboot, which premieres in January 2027.

The preview, which you can stream in the video above, features Stephen Amell’s Hobie Buchannon as the Baywatch Captain, alongside Jessica Belkin, Hassie Harrison, Shay Mitchell, Thaddeus LaGrone, Noah Beck, and Brooks Nader.

The new Baywatch finds wild-child legacy character Hobie Buchannon (Stephen Amell) serving as a Baywatch Captain, following in his legendary father Mitch’s footsteps. Hobie’s world is turned upside down when his daughter, Charlie Vale (Jessica Belkin), shows up on his doorstep, eager to carry on the Buchannon family legacy.

The series also stars Hassie Harrison as Nat, Shay Mitchell as Trna, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck as Luke, and Brooks Nader as Selene. In recurring roles, Livvy Dunne will make her acting debut as Grace, and David Chokachi will reprise his original series role as Cody Madison.

First hitting screens in 1989, Baywatch became the most-watched show in the world, airing in more than 200 countries and at its peak reaching more than a billion viewers weekly. Its global appeal drove tourism to Southern California and helped define beach culture for generations.

The Fox reboot celebrates the franchise’s enduring legacy, while re-energizing it for today’s global audience. Fans can expect all the adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.

The show is one of the big talking points at the MIPCOM international TV market in Cannes this year, where stars Amell and Nader are promoting. Yesterday, Amell, Beck and showrunner Matt Nix told us that Baywatch “reminds the broader Hollywood community that there are enormous advantages to shooting in Los Angeles.”

Baywatch is co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle with Nix (Burn Notice, The Gifted) serving as showrunner and executive producer. McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto and Mike Horowitz are executive producers. McG directed the series premiere.
