England’s Rugby League World Cup plans have been shaken up just days before the tournament begins, with 35-year-old Kallum Watkins called into the squad after Morgan Smithies was forced to withdraw through injury. Head coach Brian McDermott turned to the veteran Leeds Rhinos forward to fill the gap in the pack.
Watkins is no stranger to the international stage. The former centre, who shifted into the pack in recent years, has 32 caps and is now set for his fourth World Cup, having previously represented England in 2013, 2017 and 2022. His experience could prove vital in a squad chasing its first World Cup title.
McDermott Backs His Man
Smithies’ loss is a genuine blow. The lock and second-row forward, who is set to join the Perth Bears for the 2027 NRL season, was described by McDermott as a “real team player” whose work ethic and toughness will be missed in camp. The injury was picked up in training, ending his World Cup before it began.
But McDermott knows his replacement better than most. The coach previously worked with Watkins during a trophy-laden spell at Leeds, and said the veteran had “enjoyed a terrific season” with the Rhinos this year while remaining part of England’s performance programme building into the World Cup.
“It’s really unfortunate what has happened to Morgan with an injury picked up in training,” McDermott said. “Kallum has been great since we entered camp… I look forward to welcoming him into camp as we step up our preparations.”
World Cup Countdown
Watkins is set to arrive in Perth before England’s World Cup opener against Tonga on Saturday (10:05 BST), although he will not feature in that game. He will be available for the remaining group matches against France and Papua New Guinea, giving McDermott a seasoned option in the second row.
It is a reminder of the fine margins at major tournaments. One training-ground injury has opened the door for a 35-year-old veteran to add another chapter to an already decorated international career, and England will hope his big-game pedigree makes a difference when it matters most.
