‘Street Fighter’ Punches $4M In U.S. Previews, ‘You Can See Everything’ Earns $2M — Box Office Update

The box office’s big Friday fight is underway. Paramount/Legendary’s “Street Fighter” threw the first punch with around $4 million in U.S. preview screenings starting at 2 PM, while A24’s documentary “You Can See Everything” impressed with roughly $2 million in previews — a remarkable haul for a three-hour doc. “Street Fighter,” the PG-13 take on the Capcom classic starring Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, is expected to open north of $30 million domestically. The film cost a net $82 million, co-financed by Legendary and Capcom, and critics have been rough — it sits at just 47% on Rotten Tomatoes.

How Street Fighter Stacks Up Against Mortal Kombat 2

The $4M preview figure trails the $5.2M posted by New Line’s R-rated “Mortal Kombat 2” in May, which turned previews starting at 3 PM into a $38.5M opening weekend. A mid-fall school break — with 21% of K-12 schools off — could help drive family traffic. For comparison, Paramount’s 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” did $3M in previews on its way to a $58M opening over Presidents Day weekend.

The Documentary That Could Break Records

The real surprise of the weekend may be “You Can See Everything,” the three-hour documentary co-directed by Lance Oppenheim and host Nathan Fielder about fallen Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Shot over four years on a budget under $10 million, it holds a 100% fresh critic score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Conservative tracking had the film in the high single digits, but confidence is swelling that it could open north of $10 million — which would shatter the domestic opening record for a documentary, currently held by Amazon MGM’s “Melania” at $7.1M. Also holding previews: Focus Features’ “Sense & Sensibility” and 20th Century Studios’ “Whalefall,” both estimated around $1M apiece.
