Netflix Taps Veteran Peter Rice as Chief Content Officer, Setting Up a Culture Clash Over the Future of Movies

Netflix has named veteran Hollywood executive Peter Rice as its new Chief Content Officer, replacing Bela Bajaria after nearly a decade at the streamer. The hire marks a dramatic shift in the streaming giant’s creative leadership — and, as Variety notes, could set the stage for a fascinating corporate culture clash about the future of movies.

From Old Hollywood to the Algorithm Era

Rice is the definition of an old-school movie executive. As president of Fox Searchlight Pictures, he backed films like Slumdog Millionaire, Juno and Little Miss Sunshine. He later ran 21st Century Fox and chaired Walt Disney Television, overseeing ABC, FX, Hulu and National Geographic, before being fired by then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek in 2022.

Netflix, by contrast, runs on data. As Variety’s column observes, the modern streaming executive is less a tastemaker and more a “content officer” — someone who follows algorithms rather than instincts. Rice, a man who built his career on relationships with filmmakers and box-office judgment, will now operate inside the most metrics-driven creative machine in entertainment.

Sarandos Bets Big on Rice

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos praised Rice as “one of the most effective at-scale operators in the entertainment industry,” citing his sharp business acumen, deep talent relationships and broad experience across TV and film. Rice officially takes over on October 26, overseeing scripted and unscripted series, films and live events.

The shakeup comes as Netflix faces a sliding stock price and slowing engagement growth — plus the recent exit of high-profile talent including the Duffer Brothers to Paramount. Whether Rice’s classic Hollywood instincts can thrive inside Netflix’s data-first culture will define the streamer’s next era.
