Witch Hat Atelier Is a Summer 2026 BookWalker Hit

The numbers look even stronger in context. The manga placed 14th across BookWalker’s entire catalog for the season, and it was the second best-selling series of the first half of 2026 on the platform. Rankings cover the BookWalker English/Global Store.

A decade of acclaim for Shirahama’s fantasy

Witch Hat Atelier began serialization in Kodansha’s Morning Two seinen magazine in July 2016, with Kodansha USA bringing it to English readers from April 2019. The series follows Coco, a girl who discovers she can become a witch, and has earned a shelf of international honors — including Best Seinen at the 24th Manga Barcelona Awards, a spot on YALSA’s Top 10 Graphic Novels for Teens list, and Best Manga at the 2025 Harvey Awards.

The long-awaited anime adaptation finally arrived this year too, with the first season airing from April 6 to June 29, 2026, likely fueling the sales surge.

Controversy hasn’t dented sales

The manga recently drew online controversy after commentator ChibiReviews labeled it a ‘government psyop,’ citing a UNESCO interview with Shirahama about her artistic influences and women in the manga industry. Whatever readers make of that claim, the BookWalker rankings tell their own story: Witch Hat Atelier is one of the platform’s biggest commercial successes of the year.
