The BBC has supreme confidence in its Liverpool gangster saga. “This City Is Ours” has been greenlit for a third season — before the second has even aired.

The hit BBC drama, created by Stephen Butchard, stars Sean Bean and James Nelson-Joyce as Ronnie Phelan and Michael Kavanagh — a gang leader and his right-hand man locked in a brutal power struggle with rival gangs in Liverpool. Season 2 kicks off this Sunday, and with the renewal arriving this early, the BBC clearly wants the show to become a long-running returner.
Where Season 2 Picks Up
Season 2 resumes exactly where things left off: Michael and Diana have barely arrived in Spain when they’re dragged back into the fold to answer questions around Ricardo’s death. The new season also brings fresh faces, with Shaun Evans and Money Heist star Álvaro Morte joining the cast.
Why the Early Renewal Matters
Renewing a drama before its new season premieres is the strongest signal a broadcaster can send — it means the BBC is betting that the show’s grip on viewers will only tighten. For fans of British crime drama, it’s the latest sign that the post-Peaky-Blinders era of prestige gangster television is alive and well.
In the US, AMC+ carries Season 1, so American viewers can catch up on the Phelan empire’s rise before Season 3 inevitably expands it further.
