Firefly Wedding creator Oreko Tachibana is already back with a brand-new series. The 13th and final compiled volume of Firefly Wedding, released this week, announced that Tachibana will launch a new manga on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE app this coming winter.

A Forbidden Romance Between Two Rulers
While details are still slim, the preview for the new series sets up a tantalizing premise. The story will center on two powerful leaders who are at odds with each other and must never fall in love: the prince of a country of men, and the chief of a country of women.
The concept immediately echoes the romantic tension that made Firefly Wedding a hit — love in the most impossible circumstances. This time, instead of a noblewoman and an assassin, the forbidden pair are rulers of nations defined by gender, which promises a fantasy setting with a completely different flavor. Tachibana has shown a gift for building entire worlds around a single impossible romance, so this announcement is already one to watch.
Firefly Wedding’s Journey
Tachibana launched Firefly Wedding on the Manga ONE app in January 2023 and wrapped it up on February 2 this year after a three-year run. The series followed Satoko, a beautiful but terminally ill nobleman’s daughter, who finds her desperate marriage plans upended when she becomes the target of the mysterious assassin Shinpei. Her solution? Propose to him herself — only to learn that when it comes to love, Shinpei takes “until death do we part” very seriously.
The series ran for 13 compiled volumes, and Tachibana kept fans fed even after the finale with seven spinoff chapters released monthly from February to August. The first two chapters, titled “Koi to Doku,” and the remaining five, titled “Hitokiri to Yōdō,” were collected into a spinoff volume that shipped on the same day as the main series’ final volume. Viz Media publishes the manga in English, with the eighth volume hitting shelves on October 13.
Anime and Live-Action Adaptations
The manga has proven to be a franchise in the making. A television anime adaptation is currently airing, having debuted on October 9 on Fuji TV’s Noitamina programming block in the Friday 11:30 p.m. slot. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs, giving international fans same-day access.
That’s not all: a live-action television adaptation is also in the works, currently slated to premiere in 2027. With the manga concluded, an anime on air, and a live-action version on the horizon, Tachibana launching a fresh series this winter means fans won’t have to wait long for new material from one of shoujo manga’s rising stars.
