Harry Kane has had the kind of season strikers dream about — and now the big question is whether it ends with football’s ultimate individual prize. Match of the Day pundits Stephen Warnock, Nedum Onuoha and Lars Sivertsen have been debating whether the England captain should lift the Ballon d’Or after a “phenomenal” campaign.

The Numbers Are Absurd
Let’s start with the headline figure: 73 goals for club and country in 2025-26 — 61 for Bayern Munich and 12 for England. That’s the second-highest single-season tally of the 21st century, behind only Lionel Messi’s 82 in 2011-12, and comfortably ahead of anything Cristiano Ronaldo ever managed.
Those goals delivered silverware, too: a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double with Bayern, the European Golden Shoe, and a third straight Bundesliga scoring title — plus a cup-final hat-trick to seal the domestic double. At the 2026 World Cup, Kane struck six times as England finished third.
The Case, and the Catch
Bayern have gone all-in on the campaign. Chief commercial officer Rouven Kasper declared “It can only be Harry Kane,” while sporting director Christoph Freund insisted he deserves it. Bookmakers agree — Kane is the 4/7 favourite, ahead of Lamine Yamal and World Cup winner Rodri.
Kane himself is playing it cool: “The season I had was my best season by far… it is out of my hands, it is down to the voters.” And the stage could hardly be better set — the ceremony takes place on October 26 in London, Kane’s home city. Win, and he’d become only the fifth Englishman to claim the award — and the first since Michael Owen in 2001.
