Helmed by “You and Everything Else” director Jo Young Min, “The Perfect Lie” centers on a man and a woman who give completely opposite accounts of the same memory — and clash fiercely as they hunt for the truth.
Who Is Lying?
Seo Hyun Jin plays Kang Ji Sun, while Yoo Yeon Seok takes on the role of Min Joon Ho. Min Joon Ho is both affectionate and coolheaded, while Kang Ji Sun combines warmth with sensitivity — but the moral alignment of both characters remains deliberately unclear. As the two collide, viewers have to piece together the truth of the incident from their conflicting statements and actions.
Playing that ambiguity was the whole game for Seo Hyun Jin. She revealed that she carefully calibrated when to reveal information and how intensely to express emotions, discussing with the director scene by scene “how much to reveal at key moments” from Episodes 1 through 12. The result: Kang Ji Sun’s emotions and hidden sides surface gradually, rather than giving everything away up front.
Watch It in Three Chapters
The actress also offered viewers a viewing strategy. She suggested treating the 12-episode series as three chapters — Episodes 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12 — noting that the narrative shifts with each chapter. “As the narrative shifts with each chapter, I hope viewers will find themselves questioning anew who is actually lying,” she said.
Looking back on the shoot, she added: “We worked intensely throughout filming with the cast and crew. I really hope our drama appeals to all of you.”
With two unreliable narrators, a director who likes playing with perception, and a structure built to keep viewers second-guessing until the very end, “The Perfect Lie” looks like appointment viewing for thriller fans this October.
