A Landline Phone Icon Appeared in Your Android Status Bar — Here’s What It’s Trying to Tell You

Have you ever glanced at your Android phone’s status bar and spotted a little landline phone icon you didn’t recognize? It is easy to dismiss an unfamiliar symbol or assume something changed with your phone, but that tiny handset is actually telling you something useful — most likely, your phone is set up for Wi-Fi calling.

What the Landline Icon Means

A couple of landline-style symbols can appear in the status bar, but the most common one shows a small landline handset with a Wi-Fi symbol above it. That is the Wi-Fi calling indicator. When you’re on a call routed through your Wi-Fi network instead of your mobile signal, you should see the symbol in your status bar. Even when you’re not calling, it appears every time you pull down your quick settings panel, alongside other active features like Bluetooth and NFC, as long as the feature is toggled on.

What Wi-Fi Calling Actually Does

What Wi-Fi calling does is pretty intuitive: rather than making and receiving calls via your mobile network, your Wi-Fi connection does all the heavy lifting. This also applies to traditional text messages. It still uses your regular phone number — nothing changes for the people calling you.

Why You Might Want It On

Wi-Fi calling shines anywhere your mobile signal is weak but your Wi-Fi is strong — thick-walled apartments, offices, basements, and rural homes are classic examples. Calls connect faster, sound clearer, and don’t drop when you move between rooms. It is also a lifesaver when traveling, since calls home can route over Wi-Fi rather than pricey roaming, depending on your carrier.

How to Check Your Settings

Want to confirm it on your own phone? Open Settings and search for ‘Wi-Fi calling’ — on most Android phones it lives under Network & Internet or Connections, inside your SIM or Calls settings. There you can toggle it on or off and set whether your phone prefers calling over Wi-Fi or mobile. If you see the landline icon after enabling it, your phone is doing exactly what it should.
